M.B. York Beauty Ammo Kit – Eye Beauty Secrets

Having been based in Scottsdale, Arizona as a make up artist, esthetician and spa owner for many years, I specialize in working with dry, dehydrated and sun-damaged skin. When I started out as a make up artist over 20 years ago, I struggled with the fact that no matter how great I could make someone look with make up, if they had major crow’s feet, dark circles, and/or under-eye puffiness, it didn’t seem to matter. All you would notice was the eye area problem(s). Often, the concealer and/or powder and/or foundation would make the problem(s) worse. Noticing that almost every woman that walked in my spa had this issue, I set about creating a solution.

Is Your Concealer and Powder too Cakey?

These issues affect women everywhere. I have done make up for women in LA, New York, Orlando, Dallas, Vegas and many cities in between, and I have heard (and seen) how powder and concealer cakes into fine lines and makes them look worse. Even young girls in their late teens and early twenties seem to have crows feet and “feathering” under the eyes. Whether a woman has a small issue or a large issue with dry skin and dark circles, she wants help. Our confidence is increased when we look in the mirror and like what we see.

Step I: Pump It Up, Leave It On!

My Beauty Ammo Kit started with the first step, the “Pump it up, Leave it on” Collagen Eye Mask. Most eye creams just absorb and then disappear into the skin. There is a dearth of rich enough, hydrating enough products available for this area. I created my eye mask to be richer than anything else on the market, using collagen and shea butter to create a buttery, primer-type look and feel. The trick is to apply the eye mask in a thick white layer that stays on all day. There is no other leave-on eye mask available. It not only makes the skin look instantly younger, but also gives the added benefit of continually hydrating skin. A lot of lines and wrinkles are dehydration lines, and these are virtually eliminated with my Collagen Eye Mask.

Step II: Line Putty

The next step is my Line Putty. For years, I tried to create the perfect line filler product, but had a hard time getting the product to adhere to the skin properly. When I finally created my Line Putty, then pressed it into the skin with a sponge over my Collagen Eye Mask, the result was instantly smooth and wrinkle-free skin. The chamomile I added to the Line Putty is very soothing, and the witch hazel helps relieve puffiness. Another benefit of steps 1 and 2: my clients say applying these prodtcs feels like a mini-spa treatment…very calming and soothing. Any concern they had of it feeling too heavy is replaced with surprise at how good it feels. Then they look in the mirror and are amazed with the results.

Step III: Camouflage Eye Disguise

Now that the skin is totally hydrated and prepped, I add step 3, my best selling concealer, Camouflage Eye Disguise. After steps 1 & 2, you can now use a lot more concealer than you normally would, sweeping it across under the eyes and on the lid as a base for eye shadow. You get far better, natural-looking coverage without worrying about accentuating fine lines. My Camouflage Eye Disguise concealer works on all skin types, colors, and tones. For best results, it is really important to use a sponge to blend it in, so I included sponges in the Beauty Ammo Kit for foolproof application.

Top Tips For End Of The Summer Hair

Going to the hairdressers this week I was reprimanded by my stylist for my unsightly ends. I explained that I don’t cut my hair during the summer. What’s the point when you’re traveling and constantly in and out of the sun, pool and brutal air conditioning? Well, now, and perhaps many of you can relate, I am left with a bit of a tresstastrophe as we transition into the fall months. Below are my top tips to getting your locks back to looking lovely – and rest assured, I’ll be following them too!

Make The Cut

Wispy ends actually make hair appear thinner and shorter, and weigh down the rest of your style. What’s more, split ends can continue to break all the way up the hair shaft, causing a great deal of damage. There are a few ways to fix this. You can either have your stylist take a good inch off, or have your hair twisted in small sections, and where the ends stick out, ask your hairdresser to snip them off. The latter is a bit tedious, but it does preserve the length as much as possible.

Re-Moisturize

Chances are your hair is in need of a good moisture surge post-summer. Apply a pre-shampoo conditioner to your hair twice a week and leave it on for an hour, or sleep with it in. Philip Kingsley Elasticizer restores elasticity to damaged hair, and also improves manageability, strength and shine. You may also want to use a daily protective conditioning spray (Daily Damage Defence) and a light-weight post-shampoo cream, such as Preen Cream, to keep hair protected throughout the day.

Colour Me Pretty

If you’re a bleach fanatic, take the opportunity to temporarily colour your hair a warm and vibrant shade for fall. It will give your locks a bit of a break and your strands a chance to repair. In England these are called ‘veg’ dyes and they wash out within about a week or so. You can take subsequent applications home with you, and they are very easy to apply. My preference is a rich chestnut, but you can have your colourist recommend the best hue for your skin tone. Many salons offer consultations on colour matching, so take advantage if they have them!

Eat Right

People’s eating habits are usually pretty healthy in the summer, with fresh fish, seafood, salads and bbq’s readily available. However, come autumn, don’t let your nutritional intake slip into a flurry of processed foods, crash diets or juice fasts. Research the produce in season and try to incorporate fresh foods as much as possible – hair essential vitamins and minerals and easily destroyed with refining processes, shipping and prolonged storage.

Blow Dry Correctly

With the weather turning colder, letting your hair dry naturally isn’t such an attractive option. Blow-drying your hair is fine as long as you hold the dryer at least 12 inches away and use a heat protective spray or serum, such as Philip Kingsley Daily Damage Defence or Straight Hair. Simply apply to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, and turn off the dryer once your hair is dry – don’t keep going over the same areas.

Sleeping Beauty is an age-old fairytale, but most of us probably don’t look like Princess Aurora after a night’s slumber. Morning may bring bags under your eyes, cracked skin, a blemish-covered face, or a head full of frizzy hair, leaving you to wonder how sleeping ends up making such a negative impact on our looks.

The average person spends one third of his or her life in bed, so it makes complete sense to optimize snooze time. We’ve rounded up a few tips and tricks.

Catching Zzs: The Ultimate Anti-Ager

Researchers have long established sleep as a necessary element to achieve overall health. And getting an adequate amount of sleep each night is hands down one of the most crucial and easiest beauty treatments. Not getting enough sleep can do visible damage. In fact, participants in one study perceived sleep-deprived people as less healthy and attractive than they were after a normal night’s sleep. In another study, participants thought sleep-deprived individuals had eyes that were more swollen and redder, with darker circles as well as paler skin, increased wrinkles and fine lines, and droopy mouth corners. Researchers have also found poor sleep quality can accelerate signs of aging skin and decrease the skin’s ability to repair itself overnight.

Beauty In The Bedroom

When it comes to actual sleep positioning, aestheticians suggest back sleeping. There’s no scientific evidence, but back sleeping does prevent the face from making contact with a pillow, and perhaps decrease the chance of wrinkles. Some studies do suggest that burying our faces into a pillowcase for extended periods of time every night may be associated with increased wrinkle formation, yet others find no connection. Smooth satin sheets may also help: The silkier fibers lead to less friction compared to traditional cotton fabric, translating into less potential skin and hair damage. Others believe the material has frizz fighting effects and is less likely to suck hair of natural oils.

Another easy fix: Clean pillowcases. Our trusty pillows harbor all sorts of dirt, oil, bacteria, dust mites, and mold, some of which comes from our hair and skin cells, or leftover makeup. Transferring that grime from pillowcase to face can wreak havoc on our skin. Not regularly washing bedding can also lead to clogged pores and blemishes, while dust mites and other creepy crawlies may trigger allergies and negatively affect quality of sleep.

Make a habit of washing pillow cases once a week in hot water; toss those pillows into the washing machine on gentle every three months or so (read the labels for specific instructions). It also may be a good idea to tie longer hair in a loose knot to keep away additional dirt and oil from transferring from hair to pillow to face.

Sleeping Beauty: Treatments to Try While You Snooze

Wash up before laying down

If you want clear skin in the morning, put the kibosh on dirt and oil at night. Clean sheets are a great defense against breakouts, but washing your face before turning in for the night is even more important. Too tired? Use a toning facial cleanser wipe. Heal your heels

Beauty isn’t limited to the neck up. Pay attention to your feet before you snooze. Utilize resting time to moisturize dry, cracked heels. Mend split ends

Dip the ends of your hair in a deep conditioner (or mask) to moisturize locks while you sleep. (If you have thick hair, finger the conditioner through your entire mane) Wrap a bandana or old T-shirt loosely over your hair (or pop on a shower cap) to keep the mask from messing up your pillow. Head to the tropics

Ditch dry skin with a no-fuss nighttime moisturizer: a humidifier. Upping the moisture in the air around you will help hydrate skin without loads of lotion and body butter. When winter rolls around, a humidifier can help stave off cracked lips and bloody noses caused by dry air.

De-puff peepers

Rest on two pillows instead of one to elevate the head just a little bit above the rest of the body and help fluids around the eyes drain easier to decrease puffiness. But this is only effective if lying on the back.

Remember: Sleep is one of the most important tools in our beauty arsenal. And a good night’s slumber is essential for just about everything from mood regulation to keeping energy levels up.
