Your Best Summer Shaving Tips

your best summer shaving tips

I love the ease of summer dressing…throw a dress over my head and I’m done. I deeply appreciated this ease when I was very pregnant with my second child for most of the summer. I wore no maternity clothes — just easy, breezy (stretchy) dresses that effortlessly accommodated my spherical stomach, and still looked great once my son was “on the outside”. What a pleasure.

All. The. Shaving.

What was not a pleasure? All. The. Shaving. Made necessary by wearing dresses every day. So time-consuming, and with the astronomical price of razor blades, expensive! I also had to deal with my underarms: when I shaved every day the skin got so raw and irritated I had to gird my loins and say a prayer before applying deodorant. I made it my mission to shave so effectively that I could skip a day. Now, I’m just talking legs and underarms here; the bikini area should be waxed or lasered in my opinion. Here’s how I’m able to skip a shave…may these tips bring you smooth sailing, too!

Exfoliate First…But Gently!

I  am a well-know exfoliating enthusiast. And getting rid of any dead skin will certainly yield a closer shave. However! Shaving itself is very exfoliating, so you don’t want to run a razor over skin you just scrubbed like the dickens. It can lead to major redness and irritation…and it sure won’t tickle (I speak from experience here). A gentle body scrub applied with a light touch, or cleaning with an exfoliating body towel should do the trick.

Don’t Shave First Thing in the Morning

I know this is tough, as most of us shower  — and therefore shave — in the AM. But as you sleep, your legs swell slightly, which can cause hair to retreat back into the follicle. Know how your face can look puffy first thing in the morning? Same goes for your gams. Shaving in the afternoon or at night will allow you to get a closer shave, so if you can postpone your shave until later in the day, do.

Don’t Shave Your Legs as Soon as You Get in the Shower

Understandably, you want to get your morning routine underway, but it really is best to hang out in the shower or bath for about 10 minutes before you start shaving. This will soften the hair and open up follicles. But don’t wait too long! Your skin will start to wrinkle and swell, and it’ll then be harder to get a close shave. Also, water temperature is important! It should be warm; if it’s too chilly the hair won’t soften up and if it’s too hot it can dry out skin. Make the shower warm yet comfortable and you should be okay.

Are You Really Using Bar Soap to Shave?!

No matter how big a hurry you may be in, skip the temptation to shave with just water or with a soap or shower gel. Soap doesn’t create enough lubrication for your razor to glide easily over skin, which can lead to more cuts. Lather up your legs with a moisturizing shaving cream (I prefer creams to gels or foams, but it’s a matter of personal preference) to avoid nicks and cuts and to get a closer shave. In a pinch, hair conditioner will do just as good a job…in fact, we’ve been told by a very reputable source that Philip Kingsley Elasticizer makes a great shave cream! Though you don’t want to borrow your guy’s razor (see my last bullet point), you can borrow his shaving cream. I love shaving with Ursa Major Stellar Shave Cream — it smells fantastic, gives me a close shave and never leaves my skin dry.

What’s the Best Direction to Shave?

If you have the time, shave down your leg before you shave up. On your first pass, shave in the direction your hair grows (down the leg). Why? While shaving against the grain may get you a closer shave, it also increases the possibility of irritation, nicks, and cuts. Once your hairs are already very short, and the skin is warm and lubricated, going against the direction of hair growth is safer. Reapply your shave cream and shave again — against the direction of the hair growth. *ALSO*, rinse your razor after every run! It doesn’t matter how many blades that thing has; if they’re all clogged with hair, it can give a close shave. I like to blast mine with running water, rather than just shake it under water, as this really gets rid of any buildup.

Underarm Hair Grows in Every Direction!

You want to go over the area from several different angles. I apply my shave cream with my opposite hand (you want to be able to get a good grip with your other hand), and then use the hand of the arm I’m shaving under to pull the skin taut. Bend your arm and pull up right above where the hair starts growing. It sounds trickier than it is, and actually makes a huge difference in getting a close shave.

Are You Really Using Those One-blade Disposable Razors?!

You’re a big girl now, use a big girl razor. A single blade razor is fine in a pinch, like if you’re staying in a hotel and forgot to pack your razor, but for everyday use take my advice and invest in a five-blade razor. I LOVE Gillette Venus, especially the ones with the Olay moisturizing strip built in. They provide the smoothest results, letting you navigate tricky areas like your knees and ankles without nicking yourself. Those single-blade disposables are likelier to drag against the skin, and don’t give you nearly as close of a shave.

You’re Using Your Razor Blade HOW MANY Times?

Listen, I get it. Every time I buy razor blades I wonder when Hattori Hanzo became CEO of Gillette. Why…HOW are they $4 a pop?! But a nice razor is useless if you don’t change the cartridge at the first sign of dullness. For me this is usually about five to seven shaves. Old blades are not only less effective, but also more likely to cause bumps/redness and trap bacteria, which can potentially cause infections.

Don’t Shave with Your Guy’s Razor…

Unless you’re looking for a bathroom bloodbath. A lot of women think using a men’s razor is more effective, and it is, if you’re shaving a man’s face. A man’s razor is not designed to navigate a woman’s body, and the handle is completely inadequate — it’s too skinny and not rubbery enough — for the amount of water and lather a woman needs to shave her body in the shower. This makes it easy to lose your grip and cut yourself but GOOD. Steer clear.

After Your Shower

Show skin some extra love with an alcohol-free lotion. Emma Hardie Body Butter is fantastic! As much as I LOVE body oil, I try not to put it on freshly-shaved skin — I find it can lead to bumps. A nice lotion will help to lock in moisture and add a nice sheen to skin  — perfect for the short shorts of summertime!

Your Beach Body Courtesy Of Charlotte’s Book

your beach body courtesy of charlottes book

As soon as I booked my family’s beach vacation, I ran out to buy some new bathing suits…as any woman would, right? Now, being of a certain age, and having had two kids, I can’t complain much about how I look in a bikini. That doesn’t mean, however, I don’t see some room for improvement here and there! If bikini season has got you thinking about some physique tweaks, I cannot recommend Charlotte’s Book enough as an invaluable resource for all your aesthetic options.

Here are a few of Charlotte’s recent posts on protocols and procedures to optimize your body. If you are looking to stock up on some of the best luxury body care products, shop now at Travel Beauty.

——————————

#ASKCHARLOTTE: WHAT ARE THE BEST TREATMENTS FOR CELLULITE?

Bathing suit season is here and it’s no wonder cellulite is on the minds of many. One reader reached out asking how to deal with the dimply issue:

“I’ve tried all sorts of anti-cellulite creams and massages, but nothing has really worked yet. I think I want to try a procedure. What are the best treatments for cellulite? Read more.

#ASKCHARLOTTE: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DRY SKIN BRUSHING?

Dry skin brushing has long been a staple of many spa treatment menus because it works wonders on your skin and is a great way to prep your body for a wrap, mask or moisturizer. Dry skin brushing is a form of body exfoliation and lymphatic drainage using a dry natural bristle brush to gently brush the skin all over your body. Read more.

ARE GUMMY BEAR BREAST IMPLANTS THE SWEETEST?

Gummy bears may very well have been your favorite candy as a kid, but if you’re now considering breast augmentation, you’ll soon be talking a lot about them once again, just not the fruity, chewy edible kind.

The newest generation of breast implants is made of a firmer form of silicone gel which bounces back to its original shape after being touched, just like the consistency a gummy bear…hence, their popular nickname: gummy bear breast implants. Read more.

THE ABCC’S OF BREAST IMPLANTS

People throw around the phrase “boob job” very casually these days, which is no surprise as breast surgery has become the most performed plastic surgery procedure in the United States. But even though it seems like everybody and their mother is trading up, the reality is that getting breast implants is still a serious surgery and not to be taken lightly. Navigating and researching the decisions that need to be made can be overwhelming. Read more.

Defeat Dry Feet for Pedicure Season

defeat dry feet for pedicure season

I don’t think I’m alone when I say that each year, without fail, spring comes as a “shock” to my body. Namely, my legs need a good shaving, my milky skin needs a good tanning and my feet – especially my heels – need a heavy-duty sloughing. Even though I partake in pedicures year round, I don’t enjoy them nearly as often in the winter as I do during open-toe shoe season, and my heels are the worse for it. Also, as I’ve gotten older (and my skin has gotten drier), I find it much harder to keep my feet soft and smooth. The dryness…the cracking…the overall unattractiveness…not a good look when its time to don sandals, slingbacks, flip flops and the like.

Four Steps to Fine Feet

Never one to blanche at a beauty obstacle, I have amassed an arsenal of foot-fixing weapons to heal my heels of unsightly dryness. These weapons range from a diamond-encrusted foot file to a camphor-enhanced skin cream. It won’t be an overnight process, but regular use of even a few of these items will guarantee you happy (looking) heels and feet.

Cleanse

Glytone Exfoliating Body Wash: As you can imagine, it’s important to start the pedi-curing process with clean feet. But even cleaning your feet can contribute to their softening. Glytone Body Wash is my all-time favorite shower gel. As the name implies, it contains free glycolic acid to exfoliate and retexture skin. With the very first use, you’ll see smoother, softer skin all over your body. Start with a few times a week to get your skin used to it; if you use it every day right off the bat, it can over-exfoliate, leaving skin uncomfortable, itchy and actually drier than before. Ease into it, though, and you’ll be fine. Glytone is not only wonderful for feet, knees and elbows, but also helps to banish ingrown hairs and keratosis pilaris. Because of its exfoliating abilities, nothing leaves my skin feeling cleaner and fresher. It’s a must-have in warmer, sticky months and/or for that post-workout shower.

Scrub

A physical body scrub is essential to really soften the hardened skin on your feet. To begin, I’d scrub up 2-3 times a week, and at least once a week thereafter for maintenance. If you’ve never used a body scrub before, Yu-Be Foaming Skin Polish is a great choice, as it is not to “scrubby” (technical term). It is gentle enough to use on your face, and it cleanses too, so you don’t have to soap up before or after.

If you want a scrub that packs more of a punch, I cannot recommend (again and again) Juara Invigorating Body Scrub enough. This is an aromatic body scrub made with fresh Indonesian coffee beans. Used in Indonesian treatments to stimulate circulation in the skin, coffee has been clinically proven to provide powerful antioxidant and tightening benefits when applied to the skin. Also, because it contains gentle, sulfate-free cleansing agents, no other soap or shower gel is necessary. I have been using this scrub for over a decade. No matter how many others body scrubs I try (whatever the number in your head is, quadruple it), I always come back to this one.

Scrubbing on Steroids

I have 5 words for you: Diamancel Foot File For Calluses. Discovering this tool was one of the biggest rev-heel-ations of my life. It is called “Diamancel” because it is made with genuine diamond particle. We all know that a diamond’s beauty is rivaled only by its strength. The hard and strong diamond particles in this metal file make it super-effective at sloughing away unsightly dry skin and calluses. There is no pumice stone, egg or shaver that can do what this does…with minimal effort and minimal risk of injury! Sorry, those razor blade heel shavers scare the heck out of me. Diamancel makes a few different foot files, and they are not cheap. But, the most important one – the only one you really need – is the #20 for calluses. Also, before you scoff at the price, know that you will have this tool for years; I am going on 8 years with mine.

Use this unique tool on dry – not wet – skin. This seems counter-intuitive: You’d think wet, softer skin would come off more easily. But you’ll see the skin falling off your feet in a fine dust (do this over the tub or with something under your feet to catch the fallout). I do this right before I shower, then any rough edges left by the file are smoothed out.

Moisturize

Once your feet are clean, scrubbed and smooth, adding moisture back in – and locking it in – is crucial. Since you’ve gotten rid of the layers of dead skin, any moisturizing product will now be able to better seep into thirsty feet. Yu-Be Skin Cream is a cult-favorite that has been used in Japan for generations. It’s one of the longest and best selling skin care products in Japan today. Yu-Be is a Glycerin-based moisturizing cream enriched with Vitamin E, Vitamin B2 and Camphor (which gives it that slightly medicinal smell we love here at Travel Beauty. Yu-Be’s uniquely high Glycerin content makes it incredibly effective at hydrating, healing and soothing severely dry skin. It helps heal split or cracked skin on heels, cuticles, lips and is great for replenishing lost moisture after exposure to cold, wind, water and sun. It’s non-greasy formula absorbs quickly and locks in for hours.

If the camphor smell of Yu-Be Skin Cream isn’t for you, Alchimie Forever Dry Skin Balm is another choice. This organic skin balm has a creamier texture and a very subtle smell. It is also quite the multi-tasker: In addition to hydrating and softening even the driest skin, it also helps minimize brown spots and alleviates swelling! Slather either one of these on your feet before bed, then put on a pair of thin cotton socks. You’ll wake up with noticeably nourished, pedi-ready feet.

Mio Skincare – Fit Skin For Life

charlottes book fall beauty wellness treatment

Adding new products to our curated collection is a true labor of love. From the seemingly infinite number of beauty products available, we select what we consider not only the finest, most effective brands, but also the most unique and artfully crafted as well. When we add a new brand, we do so with much fanfare and excitement because we truly are so jazzed to bring these treasures to you.

We Care About Body Care

I’ve long been interested in body care that “does stuff”. I’ve never quite understood why my face moisturizer was designed to firm, brighten and de-line my face, but my body moisturizer just made me smell pretty (for about half an hour). Hello…my firming/tightening/toning needs didn’t end at my neck! If you’re a body care lover, too, you know that the French have always been at the forefront of body firming innovations. European pharmacy shopping sprees yielded bottles, vials, creams, brushes, oils, gels and more to make all my thigh hopes come true. Unfortunately, at the time when I needed these products mostafter having two kidsI was definitely not hopping on a plane for a Parisian pharmacy raid. C’est la vie!

Luckily, brands all over the globe have woken up and smelled the coffee body scrub, and you can now find firming and toning body products just about anywhere. The question is, though, do they work? Let us introduce you to one that really, truly, does. Travel Beauty is excited to add Mio Skincare to our virtual shelves.

The Best in Body Care

Mio Skincare is a comprehensive line of facial quality skin care…for your body. These products were created to energize and fortify your skin. This is body care for real women with real bodies. Instead of promising some unattainable airbrushed ideal, these products are designed to give you “fit skin for life”, your skin at its very best. Many of the products are made to be used in conjunction with an active lifestyle, and/or promise more pronounced results when combined with regular workouts. However, you will see results even if you’d only ever “hit” the gym with your car. I’ve been using these products for a few weeks now and I am beyond impressed with both the quality and the results. As mentioned above, I’ve been on a quest to find the most effective body care products for over a decade now. When I say these products are top-knotch, I mean French pharmacy level firming, toning and tightening.

Another Reason to Love Mio Skincare?

Mio Skincare adheres to a strict “no nasties” policy. This means you won’t find any parabens, petrolatum, mineral oil, synthetic fragrances, artificial colorants, sodium laureth or lauryl sulphate, xenoestrogens, phthalates, PEGs or glycols in ANY of their products. Just the most effective ingredientsmany plant-basedthat actually produce real results. Every product also happens to smell amazing, due to a slew of essential oils and other yummy natural active ingredients.

Full Size Products and Travel Kits

In addition to select full size Mio Skincare products, we have also added two of Mio Skincare’s travel kits. If you are curious about the brand (and how can you not be?), these kits are the perfect introduction to these truly excellent products. If you already love Mio and want to take these firming and toning wonders with you on your next vacation, these perfectly-prepared packs are just what you need. Check them out!

Strong Is The New Skinny Kit

Mio really imbues all their products with empowerment, yet another reason to love the brand. You already know that you are strong and beautiful…now your skin will be, too. No diet required. This kit has 3 perfect trial or travel sizes to give you smooth, strong, resilient FIT skin. This kit comes with:

The Activist™ firming active body oil in 1 fl oz

How to Pack Your Beauty Products For An Overnight Trip

how to pack beauty products overnight trip

Packing beauty products for an overnight trip is not as simple as it seems (or as simple as my husband would like it to be). There’s a nighttime routine, a morning routine and various and sundry beauty incidentals to take into consideration. I pack so many products because I don’t want to wake up with, say, a monstrous pimple and have nothing with which to treat it. Like a true Beauty Scout, I am always prepared.

Face

  • I have been loving this Binchotan Charcoal Facial Cleansing Mask lately. It can be used as a cleanser, makeup remover and/or mask. Don’t let the dark color or thick texture fool you, it is totally gentle enough to use on eyes. Every time I use it I get a compliment on my skin, and I notice a difference in my overall skin quality as well. I like to have this purifying product on hand in case my skin is acting up/breaking out.
  • I am still in search of the very best drugstore face wipe as I blow through them so quickly. These Yes To Carrots Facial Wipes are ok, though I need at least 2 to feel truly clean. This would be understandable if I wore a lot of makeup, but I wear little to no makeup, so I feel like one wipe should be sufficient!
  • Love packing my many mini products from Heaven Skincare: Bee Venom Mask, Formula Bee Eyes and New Edition Cleansing Cream. They are all fantastic – truly anti-aging. I usually don’t like cream cleansers because many don’t leave my skin feeling as clean as I’d like it to feel (which is to say, squeaky). This one does, and like the Binchotan Charcoal Face Mask, it is gentle enough to use on eyes.
  • These two B. Kamins products are classics in my book: Renewal Serum, is a serum in cream form, which I really like as its easy to apply and easy to layer with other products. I see a real difference in cell turnover and overall quality of skin when I use this serum. It works really well to get rid of the red spots that linger too long after a pimple goes away. I like to put it on and then apply the Bee Venom Mask on top of it. Sometimes I’ll apply an oil, too, before anything else. Kypris Beauty and Emma Hardie (coming soon to Travel Beauty) make really nice face oils. B. Kamins BB Cream evens out my skin tone and gives my skin the slightest luminescence. It’s one of the only BBs I’ve found that isn’t too orange for me…that is to say, too orange for someone as pale as I am!

Body – My Favorite!

  • I’d LOVE to pack my Sasawashi Body Scrub Towel so I can use it every day, but I do allow myself some practicality-based packing transgressions. A nice, nubby washcloth is just fine to use for one shower, and then I don’t have to worry about transporting a damp Body Scrub Towel (mild-ewww). Besides, my very favorite body wash contains glycolic acid, and is therefore itself exfoliating. Glytone Body Wash is probably the most un-green beauty product I use, but it is so good that I just won’t give it up. It not only smoothes and softens my skin (even my heels!) but it also helps prevent body breakouts like nothing else – a must if the gym/sweating gives you pimples.
  • Now for body moisture products! Acure Organics and/or Mio Skincare & Lavido for body. I mix these with a Heaven Skincare Cellulite & Firming Oil  and apply everywhere. The Lavido lotion is awesome to apply to hands and arms throughout the day, and especially right before bed – the lavender scent is very soothing.
  • Everyone needs a tongue scraper; once you start doing it, you’ll never stop. I wrote a whole blog – complete with professional opinion – about the practice of tongue scraping. Every time I get my teeth cleaned, my dentist says how clean my teeth are, and I know it’s because I scrape religiously.

And Off to Sleep

  • Last but not least, here is one of my newer treats: My Binchotan Charcoal Eye Mask! The layer of charcoal in this eye mask helps increase circulation, soothe eye area and relieve optical nerve fatigue. It’s like black out shades for my eyes, and helps me fall asleep so much faster than usual…which is HUGE for an insomniac like me!

Hair

  • Pack right tip: packing large bottles of shampoo and conditioner can be a headache. If you absolutely must pack a shampoo and conditioner Philip Kingsley makes convenient ready to go Jet Sets for every hair type.
  • That said - I never leave home without Phylia de M. Connect and/or ReConnect hair & scalp treatment. Phylia de M. is my favorite beauty brand to launch in the past ~2 years, I wrote not one, but two blogs about why I love this brand so…the products are just phenomenal.
  • Styling-wise: Arrojo Volume Foam. It’s usually the only thing I put in my hair. I never blow dry my hair (blog post all about that on the way). I just let it air dry a bit and then lightly scrunch this in. Maybe I’ll work a little May Lindstrom The Good Stuff into the ends and bangs if I want a more polished look with some piece-y texture, but it comes in a heavy glass bottle, so it’s not something I want to travel with. Instead, I use whatever leftover body cream/oil I have on my hands and work that into my ends, much to the same effect.

Think this is too much to pack for an overnight trip? Let us know what beauty products you won’t sleep out without!
