M.B. York Beauty Ammo Kit – Eye Beauty Secrets

under eye beauty secrets

Having been based in Scottsdale, Arizona as a make up artist, esthetician and spa owner for many years, I specialize in working with dry, dehydrated and sun-damaged skin. When I started out as a make up artist over 20 years ago, I struggled with the fact that no matter how great I could make someone look with make up, if they had major crow’s feet, dark circles, and/or under-eye puffiness, it didn’t seem to matter. All you would notice was the eye area problem(s). Often, the concealer and/or powder and/or foundation would make the problem(s) worse. Noticing that almost every woman that walked in my spa had this issue, I set about creating a solution.

Is Your Concealer and Powder too Cakey?

These issues affect women everywhere. I have done make up for women in LA, New York, Orlando, Dallas, Vegas and many cities in between, and I have heard (and seen) how powder and concealer cakes into fine lines and makes them look worse. Even young girls in their late teens and early twenties seem to have crows feet and “feathering” under the eyes. Whether a woman has a small issue or a large issue with dry skin and dark circles, she wants help. Our confidence is increased when we look in the mirror and like what we see.

Step I: Pump It Up, Leave It On!

My Beauty Ammo Kit started with the first step, the “Pump it up, Leave it on” Collagen Eye Mask. Most eye creams just absorb and then disappear into the skin. There is a dearth of rich enough, hydrating enough products available for this area. I created my eye mask to be richer than anything else on the market, using collagen and shea butter to create a buttery, primer-type look and feel. The trick is to apply the eye mask in a thick white layer that stays on all day. There is no other leave-on eye mask available. It not only makes the skin look instantly younger, but also gives the added benefit of continually hydrating skin. A lot of lines and wrinkles are dehydration lines, and these are virtually eliminated with my Collagen Eye Mask.

Step II: Line Putty

The next step is my Line Putty. For years, I tried to create the perfect line filler product, but had a hard time getting the product to adhere to the skin properly. When I finally created my Line Putty, then pressed it into the skin with a sponge over my Collagen Eye Mask, the result was instantly smooth and wrinkle-free skin. The chamomile I added to the Line Putty is very soothing, and the witch hazel helps relieve puffiness. Another benefit of steps 1 and 2: my clients say applying these prodtcs feels like a mini-spa treatment…very calming and soothing. Any concern they had of it feeling too heavy is replaced with surprise at how good it feels. Then they look in the mirror and are amazed with the results.

Step III: Camouflage Eye Disguise

Now that the skin is totally hydrated and prepped, I add step 3, my best selling concealer, Camouflage Eye Disguise. After steps 1 & 2, you can now use a lot more concealer than you normally would, sweeping it across under the eyes and on the lid as a base for eye shadow. You get far better, natural-looking coverage without worrying about accentuating fine lines. My Camouflage Eye Disguise concealer works on all skin types, colors, and tones. For best results, it is really important to use a sponge to blend it in, so I included sponges in the Beauty Ammo Kit for foolproof application.

Heather Mills & Kelly Ripa

Since launching the Beauty Ammo Kit, I have sold tens of thousands in spas and salons around the US. I’ve sold Beauty Ammo on HSN, Ideal Vitality TV in London and in Henri Bendel. While doing an event at Henri Bendel, I met Heather Mills, who was shopping with her make up artist. He was so impressed with my Beauty Ammo Kit that he immediately called Kelly Rippa’s make up artist to share the dramatic results.

Celebrities Using M.B. York’s Beauty Ammo Kit

I often get called onto sets to apply Beauty Ammo on celebrities such as Jane Lynch, Jamie Lee Curtis, Martin Sheen, Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Kevin Bacon before the make up team does their make up. I was also recently asked for Beauty Ammo for Valerie Bertinelli, Betty White, Jane Leeves and Wendy Malick on the set of Hot in Cleveland. Actors love Beauty Ammo because it makes them look great for hours and allows them to avoid the constant touching up of powder throughout the day, which usually leads to the accentuation of fine lines.

After training the Dancing With the Stars make up team on how to use Beauty Ammo, they said it made Chloris Lechman look 30 years younger. The makeup team said it is “definitely one of our beauty secrets that the entire cast and crew loves.” Even the judges, Carrie Ann, Leni and Bruno love Beauty Ammo!

Beauty Ammo Kit is Easy to Use at Home

Another great benefit of my Beauty Ammo Kit is that you can apply it by itself in less than one minute. Even if you don’t like to wear foundation or make up elsewhere on your face, your entire eye area will be hydrated, fresher and brighter all day long.

Back to School Beauty Overhaul

back to school beauty overhaul makeover

By the end of summer, your skin may be tanned, but the rest of you could probably use a total beauty overhaul. Now that the kids are back in school, you may just get enough time to yourself for a spa day…the next best thing to a beach day. Don’t know where to start? We’ve got some suggestions (of course).

Hair and Scalp Care

During summer, we all want to suck the marrow out of the sunlight hours. If you have kids, bedtime might have become a bit lax in favor of fireworks and franks. If you’ve been sleeping less and not eating as healthfully as you usually do, your hair and scalp may pay the price. If sunburned skin isn’t the only thing you’re shedding, we highly recommend a visit to Philip Kingsley’s NYC Clinic. Whether you need a deep moisturizing treatment or a complete hair and scalp overhaul, book an appointment with Elizabeth and team to get your scalp and strands back in shape.

Also, pick up an Elasticizer. Used 1 – 2 times per week, this award-winning hair and scalp mask is akin to an at-home hair moisturizing treatment. Explore Kingsley’s other award winning hair care products.

Facials & Skin Care

If you have let your skin care routine slide a bit over the summer, now is the perfect time to get back into the groove. Make an appointment at Yasmine Djerradine Institut de Beauté on the Upper East Side. If you live anywhere in the New York Tri-state area, it is absolutely worth the trip. If you can’t get in to see Yasmine, we recommend Lily or Karen. A remodeling facial or power peel are the perfect treatments to wake up the face and slough off the skin that has likely had its share of elemental damage from the rays of the sun. Also, recommit to a regular routine of cleansing, moisturizing and applying an under eye cream and/or serum morning and night. It’s never too late to turn back the hands of time.

Brows And ‘Stache

While you are at Yasmine Djerradine Spa, make sure that you maximize your time by minimizing your facial hair. Your eyebrows really do frame your face and don’t worry, waxing your lip will not strip the elasticity from the skin around it. Word to the wise: you are not fooling anyone by dying your mustache blond. The hair will still be there, it will just be blonde and everyone will talk about you behind your back (Well, we certainly will).

Makeup Lesson

Once a year, its worth it to have your makeup done professionally. Even if you have your routine down pat, you can learn a new trick or two that can kick your look up a notch! For those of us in the New York Tri-state area who can’t get to LA or Scottsdale to see M.B. York, stop in to see Kaoru at Salon Ishi. She will not only do a flawless application for you, but also show you how to create the look yourself and make a list of exactly what she used so that you can recreate the look at home.

Nail Care

There is only one place in NYC that Travel Beauty entrusts with our fingers and *especially* our toes: Celina Nails. Located on the Upper West Side, this mani mecca is the cure for the common pedicure. Celina’s team of Eastern European Pedi Professionals painstakingly care for your feet with surgical precision. A few flicks of their files and these ladies could turn Frodo into foot fetishist fodder. (By the way, if your soles really do look straight out of the Shire after a summer in the sand, you can request the private room on the second floor.)

Visit our RGB Cosmetics collection of five-free nail polishes to see the colors that we are loving now.

Don’t Let Go of Your Summer Glow

Prolong your sun-kissed look with a sunless tanning session at Euphoria Spa in Tribeca. Consistently awarded in Allure’s Best of Beauty, the tans here are always impeccably done. In a few minutes flat you’ll have a natural bronzy glow that we promise will have you add an extra sway to your step. Can’t get to the spa? Try our self-tanning products.

“Bach” To School

We know back to school time isn’t all makeup and manicures. Stress is inevitable in September. The multiple runs to Staples alone are enough to make anyone consider homeschooling! When it all seems too much, be sure to have some Bach’s Rescue Remedy on hand…and/or in purse! Just a few sprays will help you stay cool calm and collected, no matter how many backpacks your daughter says she hates until she deems one “tolerable”.

M.B. York’s Paint by Numbers Eyeshadow Kit

mb-york-paint-by-numbers-eyeshadow-kit.450x0

Having done the makeup of thousands of women over the years, I can say with authority that most women have no idea how to apply eye makeup. I hear it from every woman I work on and see it firsthand when they sit in my makeup chair. They are either:

  • unclear what looks good on them and how to apply it so they do little or nothing OR
  • have a set routine that they do every day that is not flattering…yet they don’t know it’s not flattering!

How We Get Stuck in Bad Makeup Routines

Often, women will be attached to a liquid liner, or some kind of frosty shadow combination that they apply every day without fail, and have no idea how to break the cycle – or that they even need to break the cycle! At one point or another, many women had a department store makeover. Usually, the amount of colors used during this makeover – and inability of the salesperson to teach them how to duplicate the look at home – results in a half-baked makeover attempt that is utterly lacking, yet still becomes a woman’s routine for the next 10 years.

Keep it Simple

I am shocked that most women who apply lots of shadow seem to think it looks good, when more often than not, it actually makes them look worse. This, in my opinion, is why most men don’t like makeup. They see so many women applying makeup heavy-handedly in all the wrong places, using all the wrong colors and all the wrong tools. I always wonder why no one tells these women that their makeup is wrong and making them look older and/or desperate and/or or cheap. Especially older women, who seem to be especially stuck in their ways and don’t know who to trust to help them update their look.

One of the biggest obstacles is that there are waaaay too many options out there, leaving a lot of room for error. If you go into a store, you have to trust the salesperson that is picking the colors for you. I am shocked when I walk through the enormous makeup department at Bergdorf Goodman and see so many salespeople, who badly need makeovers themselves, giving makeovers to customers! Who do you trust? If you do get lucky and have a talented makeup artist doing your makeover, you are then faced with a multitude of colors, brushes, not to mention a huge bill, if you have the courage to attempt the look yourself at home. Maybe you spring for just one of the shadows, or just the liner. Then when applying the makeup at home, you wish you had spent the money on all the products because you loved looking that good and feel hopeless that you’ll ever be able to recreate the look yourself.

Enter Paint By Number Eyeshadow Kit

It is with these issues in mind that I created my Paint by Numbers Eyeshadow Kit. This eyeshadow kit comes with a makeup palette containing 6 shadows, all numbered 1, 2, or 3. There’s a row for daytime and a row for night. It also comes with 3 brushes, also numbered 1, 2, and 3, and a foolproof diagram showing you exactly where each color goes. I have created the perfect base, crease, and liner colors that work on all skin types, tones and eye colors.

An Eyeshadow Palette That Works for Everyone

My client’s loyalty, rave reviews and amazing looking eyes prove the concept works. It is so important that a base color not be too light, too dark, too pink or too peach. You want it to be the perfect base to make the eye open and pop, without making lids look wrinkled. The crease colors I created are more like blush colors, kind of a soft champagne bronze that opens the eye but doesn’t distract from your natural beauty. The shadow liners I created also compliment all eye colors, work with anything in your wardrobe and make you look younger and more vibrant. I sold these same shadows separately for years before creating the kit, and every woman I put them on would buy them. I would always draw the diagram, and write exactly which brush to use. A lot of times they would say they already had brushes, but if they didn’t buy them from me would more often than not come back and say it just doesn’t look the same as when I did it.

Everything You Need for Easy Makeup Application

I decided to include everything in one eyeshadow kit: diagram, shadows and brushes to simplify the process and make it easy and fun. The whole eyeshadow application should take a couple minutes, tops! My clients come back and tell me this is the first time they have ever had their makeup done and been able to recreate the look at home. Plus, the kit is great for travel!

Everyone gets tired of fishing each color out of her makeup bag, opening and closing all the lids, and digging out the right brushes. This little book-shaped eyeshadow kit opens up with everything neat and organized. My clients love being able to throw out all their old colors.

The Paint By Numbers Eyeshadow Kit is also truly multi-generational. My best friend who is in her 40s uses it along with her 15 year old daughter and 65 year old mom. And they all have different hair and eye colors! What better way to bond with your daughter or mom than sharing your newest beauty secrets?!

M.B. York’s Summer Makeup Ideas

mb york summer makeup ideas

Being based in Scottsdale, Arizona where temperatures can soar to 110 degrees in the summer, my specialty, as an esthetician and spa owner, is dealing with dry, dehydrated, sun damaged skin. Here is how I keep myself and my clients protected and perfected during the summer swelter.

Summer Makeup Products Should Include SPF

I am a big believer in layering sun protection, so if you sweat throughout the day you will still be protected. I always wear an oil free moisturizer with at least a 30 SPF, and apply it on my face and neck. You can also layer your day moisturizer or serum under a sunscreen or mix your sun care with a BB Cream. Out of the shower, instead of body lotion I use an SPF 30 on my arms, hands, and décolletage. This is part of my routine whether I plan on being in the sun or not. Next, I follow with an oil-free mineral tinted primer with a broad spectrum SPF 20 and blend it in with my fingers for maximum coverage. My clients that are golfers especially love this!

I personally like more coverage than a primer alone, so I then put a custom blended oil free foundation formula on top of the tinted primer, this time applying it with a sponge for more sheer coverage. My foundation has an additional SPF factor of 8, which isn’t enough alone, but over the moisturizer and primer is plenty.

The Right Summer Bronzer Creates a Natural Glow

Another must for summer is a bronzing powder to add a glow and set makeup. Powder will keep your foundation and primer from being absorbed into your skin and also gives you a more matte finish – a must for high temperatures. I apply it with a large brush for more sheer coverage and to keep the powder from accentuating fine lines and wrinkles. I like bronzers with some pink and yellow tones, which are hard to find. Most women look too orange from wearing yellow-based foundation and then an orange bronzer on top. Adding pink to foundation formulas and bronzing powders is a special trick I do to cut the yellow undertones in the skin and add a healthy, rosy-looking natural glow.

The Flattering Summertime Double Blush

Another technique I have for summer makeup application is my “Double Dip” tip. I have this amazing double blush that is the perfect rose on one half and universally-flattering bronze on the other. I mix them both together for blush, then use the bronze side alone for contouring around the jawline, and again as crease eyeshadow. You recreate this application technique with your favorite bronzer and rose-colored blush already in your makeup kit. I then add a very soft pink blush highlighter over the blush, straight down the center of the nose, and over the entire lid as eyeshadow base.

So basically these 2 “blush” products can be used as blush, highlighter, and eyeshadow. This makes it so fast and easy for summer, and is a perfect routine for travel as well.

Summer Lip Color

Finally, for lips, I use a rosy bronze lipstick and add a little bit of peachy/pink gloss with gold undertones on top. This way the blush, eyeshadow and lips are all in the same pinky/peach tones that look great on all skin tones, work with anything in your wardrobe and make you look fresh and young. Men especially love this look on women of all ages, since it is natural and soft yet illuminating.

Brenda Christian Interview Pt. 2: Proper Eyebrow Pencil Application

brenda christian cosmetics expert advice

Here’s part 2 of our interview with inspiring female beauty entrepreneur, Brenda Christian. (Be sure to read part 1.) Here she shares some of her best brow tips that she’s learned in her 30+ year career.

What are the biggest mistakes people make with their eyebrow makeup?

  • Drawing on the eyebrows with soft brow pencils or brush-on brow product, trying to color in the empty space. Brow hairs should always be stroked into the brow line in tiny short strokes, working in the direction from which the brow hair would grow naturally, in order to closely simulate real hair.
  • Another mistake is starting the eyebrows too far from the center of the face. Placement of the eyebrow is the most important cosmetic decision you will make for your face. (Read Brenda’s comprehensive shaping guide below.) Sometimes this requires patience for natural hair re-growth. During this time, filling in with Universal Brow Definer® and Perfect Brow® is ideal.
  • Third is trying to lift the eyes by drawing a circular style to the brow instead of gently framing the eye itself in its natural shape.

What step should eyebrow shaping be in your makeup routine?

Brow clean-up, such as major tweezing or waxing, should be done prior to applying any makeup, so you are working on clean skin. For your daily routine, eyebrows should be applied in the middle, after the application of skin treatment, foundation, concealers, and eye primer. Brush the brows upward, clean-up any stray hairs with a good pair of tweezers, sharpen and apply Universal Brow Definer® and set by pressing on Perfect Brow Gel®.

What are your tips for achieving the best brow shape?

It always concerns me when I see a professional makeup artist tell someone that there is an absolute rule for applying eyebrows, because the truth is there is not. There are so many variables which must be taken into account, such as ethnicity, natural and/or enhanced hair color, size of the eyes, both horizontally and vertically, amount of lid above the eye and skin in the brow bone area, width of the nose and the nostrils and overall bone structure of the client.

Framing The Eyes

The two most important considerations are balancing the face and framing the eyes. The eyebrow is like a frame on a fine painting in your living room. One must take into account the color of the wall, the amount of space around the frame and the size of the piece of art. The overall goal is to add beauty to the room by framing the art. A beautiful room (the face) is the primary objective, and the art (the eyes) should enhance the room. If the wall is large and the art is small and a heavy, ornate frame is chosen, then the focus becomes the frame…not the room, not the art. So it is with eyebrow design.

The goal is to create the most beautiful face, drawing attention to the eyes by softly and specifically framing them, keeping in mind the balance of the face so that a brow appears to be almost non-existent, youthful, and above all, natural. This isn’t to say that fashion trends do not play a part in the eyebrow design dynamic. Today’s brow is fuller, soft in relation to the hair color of the client, and carefully stroked with a precision wedge or point simulating real eyebrow hairs.

Always work with a very sharp pencil, never a soft, crayon like pencil. The texture of the pencil is very important because it must allow you to create the width of an actual hair. Apply the Universal Brow Definer® in short, firm strokes, always in the direction the hair would grow naturally. This automatically gives a wider look to the root area of the brow stroke, narrowing toward the end of the hair, just as natural eyebrow hairs appear. The natural texture of the brow is achieved by applying Perfect Brow Gel® in short, pressing strokes, releasing a matte gel over the pencil strokes to set and enhance the brow application.

Brow Color

As far as color is concerned, very rarely should eyebrow hair be darker than a client’s natural hair. Even if a blond has dramatically lightened her hair, the natural hair color will be a deeper, ash or golden blond color and that color eyebrow will appear most natural. Likewise, a red head will rarely have a bright red eyebrow. Look at the eyebrows on a naturally auburn haired child and you will see a reddened softened brown or blonde brow, rarely a bright red tone. A brunette should apply the tone of brown or black closest to his or her natural hair color but a slight shade lighter and then layer the strokes of the hairs to increase density for a more natural look, never appearing hard. On most people, the Universal Brow Definer® and Perfect Brow Gel® will provide the most natural eyebrow appearance possible.

Sometimes, I will variegate in a distinct color like an auburn red, or deep black very, very sparingly to enhance the tone of the Universal Brow Definer® application, but this is the exception and not the rule.

Step-by-Step Eyebrow Shaping Guide

brenda-christian-brenda-christian-cosmeticsAs far as shaping is concerned, the most general guidance I can suggest is that the brow should begin above the inner tear duct and arch above the outer iris, then gently taper outward at about a 15-20 degree downward angle to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch outside the outer eye including the eyelash extension length. Be careful not to dip down on the edges of the eyebrow causing a semi-circular clown like appearance.

Don’t use the nose as a guide, because nose widths vary both between the eyes and at the nostrils, so to use the nose can throw the entire eyebrow shaping out of proper alignment with the eye.

An important tool is a good magnification mirror, but a full-sized mirror should be used to check shaping during the process so that the overall appearance is natural.

As far as the density and width of the brow are concerned, that is where the amount of eyelid above the eye comes into play, as well as the overall facial bone structure, whether it is small, medium, or large. This is where artistry comes into play.

Expert Brow Advice

My best advice is to consult a professional makeup artist with a specialty in eyebrow design and enjoy a professional design that you can maintain on your own.

Personally, one of my greatest joys is a private eyebrow consultation. My fee is $125.00 per client and includes a take-home brow kit to continue the look, a very worthwhile investment in your personal style.
