Oscar Night with M.B. York

My Oscar Night Adventure

One of my favorite Oscar experiences is when, a few years back, I decided to splurge on a room at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills on Oscar night. The limos were lined up in the valet area and around the block starting at around noon. The nominees and their beauty entourages were coming in and out of the hotel and pictures were being snapped by their very own “Mamarazzi”. Yes, huge celebs often have their mothers follow them around taking pictures.

The private party in the Four Seasons Lounge was pretty relaxed. There were huge projector screens playing the award show. It was on a delay, and as celebs like Morgan Freeman were being nominated on the screen, they were walking into the bar and celebrating! It was surreal to say the least, and so much fun to watch the celebs celebrating their wins in the relaxed bar atmosphere.

A Surprise Guest

My assistant and I ended up sharing a table with a designer and his two assistants. I sat next to him and he was so excited as women he dressed came out on the stage, including Hillary Swank. This designer had also spent a lot of time in Scottsdale, and we talked about his favorite places to stay there. I was very excited for him and assumed he was an up and coming new designer, since he seemed so genuinely excited to see the nominees wearing his designs. We all had a blast…including checking out Johnny Depp who was hanging out on the outside patio.

The Mystery Man…Revealed!

When I went to bed around midnight, I gazed out of my hotel room window and watched as limo after limo drove past. The next morning, we turned on E! News to get the post-show scoop and I said to my assistant, “We need to see who that designer was we were sitting next to”. Turns out it was Calvin Klein! Talk about wanting to kick myself. He even introduced himself as Calvin but it never clicked! He looked nothing like he did in the pictures I had seen, including the cover of his autobiography which I was reading and was on my bedside table! He was also so unassuming and sweet, you would have never thought you were sitting next to a fashion icon.

The Excitement of Awards Season

Having done lots of celebrity gifting suites leading up to the Oscars, I can say that it is such a privilege to personally show the nominees my products and how they work. With very few exceptions, they are so gracious about taking photos with my Beauty Ammo Kit or Rock Your Tube dress. They give me their full attention, and you can tell they are blissfully soaking up every minute of the dream come true of being nominated for an Oscar.

My Turn on the Red Carpet

Today, I am putting the final polish on my screenplay, “Survival of the Prettiest”, in which my Beauty Ammo Kit saves the world with my vegetarian message. I look forward to the year my limo rolls up to the red carpet and my screenplay is nominated.  Like my night at the Four Seasons hanging out with Calvin, all I can say is, “Life is but a dream”.

Winter Skin Care Tips: Keeping Your Face Fresh & Moisturized

Apparently we are in for another brutal winter. As the winter months descend upon us, the colder temperatures can dry out skin, causing flakey, cakey makeup and various other cosmetic complications. Maybe you will find that your foundation isn’t blending into your skin well; it just sits on top of it. I see it all too often in my makeup chair. So what is the solution?

Exfoliate

First of all, exfoliation is a must! I recommend keeping some kind of scrub (Lavido is a good choice) in your shower and using it daily with your Clarisonic skin brush, if you have one. I have 2 that I alternate between, one that has AHA/BHA and the other that is a Blueberry and Coffee Bean Exfoliator. If scrubs are not your thing, Juvena Pure Lifting Peeling Powder is a great exfoliating choice for sensitive skin, and Elemis Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Gel Mask does all the work for you – just put it on for 10 minutes to exfoliate the dead skin cells and reveal a smoother more youthful appearance. This newer, fresher skin actually absorbs moisturizers better instead of sitting on top of the dead skin.

Moisturize

Now that you’ve revealed your new skin, it’s time to worry about what you put on that skin! Winter is a good time to switch from your oil free SPF summer moisturizer to something a little richer for daytime, (Travel Beauty loves Cosmetics 27 Baume 27) as well as switching to a moisturizing foundation formula. Applying your foundation with a sponge will help it to blend in and give you a natural looking finish. (For light sheer coverage that still provides mega-moisture, try B. Kamins BB Cream.)

Ditch your summer bronzer for something lighter with some pink tones instead of orange. When applying, make sure to use a big brush for a sheerer finish. The powder will set your foundation and keep your makeup from just absorbing into your skin. The touch of pink in your powder will keep you from looking pale and sallow.

Let’s Get Down to Business

My Beauty Ammo Kit for the under eye area will also solve the problem of your foundation, concealer, or powder creasing or caking up which is the #1 problem all women face! The Collagen Eye Mask hydrates all day with collagen and shea butter. The Line Putty fills in fine lines, calms and soothes skin with chamomile and the witch hazel helps with puffiness. Finally, the Camouflage Eye Disguise Concealer blends in perfectly giving you the coverage you need without making fine lines look worse! With these minor adjustments, you will look fresh and dewy no matter what the outside temperatures!

Makeup and Foundation Tips From MB York

Foundation Information: Wear It Well

Maybe you’ve been going light on makeup and foundation over the warmer summer months, as we have, but as we transition into fall weather here are some great tips from M.B. York on getting your foundation and eye makeup just right.

—————

To Wear Or Not To Wear?

Foundation is one of the most important steps of makeup application (after my Beauty Ammo Kit – more on that in a bit). Getting the color right is crucial. If you are trusting the wrong lighting, wrong salesperson, or wrong formula, there is a lot of room for error. In my 20 years of custom blending foundations, here is what I’ve found:

Many formulas are too yellow. One way to correct this is add a small amount of fuchsia toner to a foundation. Ideally, you want an equal amount of pink and yellow in your skin, and I often have to “de-orange” women’s foundation.

Most women don’t want to look too pale, and there can be added issues like rosacea or freckles, on top of fair skin. Do you go lighter like the base, darker like the freckles or somewhere in between?  Most women want some color in their skin, and look best with a slightly darker formula.

I prefer an oil-free liquid formula: They are easiest to apply and look most natural.

How To Apply

Another mistake women make is blending foundation in their fingers. It ends up looking and feeling too heavy on the skin, and if the color isn’t perfect to begin with, it will sit on top of the skin. It’s best to use a sponge to blend foundation in. You want to get the coverage you need while looking like you have nothing on. Dot the foundation formula on your nose, forehead, chin and on each cheek, and then blend it all in with the sponge. The right color liquid foundation, correctly applied with a sponge, is the secret to beautiful skin. When your skin looks great, you can get away with wearing a lot less make up. One more secret? My Beauty Ammo Kit.

Beauty Ammo Kit: Your Eye Area Arsenal

My 3 step Beauty Ammo Kit is all you need for a flawless eye area. Here’s why:

Most eye creams just absorb into your skin. If you follow with concealer, powder or foundation, the makeup collects in the fine lines and actually makes your wrinkles more pronounced.

  • Step 1 of the Beauty Ammo Kit, Collagen Eye Mask, is a thick, rich base that stays on all day. It contains collagen and shea butter to provide serious hydration.
  • Step 2, Line Putty, goes right on top of the Collagen Eye Mask, and fills in fine lines while it soothes skin with chamomile and witch hazel.
  • Step 3 is my Dual Action Concealer. Once you have the rich base provided by steps 1 and 2, you can use a lot more concealer to get the coverage you need without worrying about it caking, creasing and making fine lines look worse. You can also use the concealer on your eyelid as a great base for your eye shadow.

Be sure to check out the rest of the Travel Beauty Blog for more tips on getting great-looking skin.

M.B. York Beauty Ammo Kit – Eye Beauty Secrets

Having been based in Scottsdale, Arizona as a make up artist, esthetician and spa owner for many years, I specialize in working with dry, dehydrated and sun-damaged skin. When I started out as a make up artist over 20 years ago, I struggled with the fact that no matter how great I could make someone look with make up, if they had major crow’s feet, dark circles, and/or under-eye puffiness, it didn’t seem to matter. All you would notice was the eye area problem(s). Often, the concealer and/or powder and/or foundation would make the problem(s) worse. Noticing that almost every woman that walked in my spa had this issue, I set about creating a solution.

Is Your Concealer and Powder too Cakey?

These issues affect women everywhere. I have done make up for women in LA, New York, Orlando, Dallas, Vegas and many cities in between, and I have heard (and seen) how powder and concealer cakes into fine lines and makes them look worse. Even young girls in their late teens and early twenties seem to have crows feet and “feathering” under the eyes. Whether a woman has a small issue or a large issue with dry skin and dark circles, she wants help. Our confidence is increased when we look in the mirror and like what we see.

Step I: Pump It Up, Leave It On!

My Beauty Ammo Kit started with the first step, the “Pump it up, Leave it on” Collagen Eye Mask. Most eye creams just absorb and then disappear into the skin. There is a dearth of rich enough, hydrating enough products available for this area. I created my eye mask to be richer than anything else on the market, using collagen and shea butter to create a buttery, primer-type look and feel. The trick is to apply the eye mask in a thick white layer that stays on all day. There is no other leave-on eye mask available. It not only makes the skin look instantly younger, but also gives the added benefit of continually hydrating skin. A lot of lines and wrinkles are dehydration lines, and these are virtually eliminated with my Collagen Eye Mask.

Step II: Line Putty

The next step is my Line Putty. For years, I tried to create the perfect line filler product, but had a hard time getting the product to adhere to the skin properly. When I finally created my Line Putty, then pressed it into the skin with a sponge over my Collagen Eye Mask, the result was instantly smooth and wrinkle-free skin. The chamomile I added to the Line Putty is very soothing, and the witch hazel helps relieve puffiness. Another benefit of steps 1 and 2: my clients say applying these prodtcs feels like a mini-spa treatment…very calming and soothing. Any concern they had of it feeling too heavy is replaced with surprise at how good it feels. Then they look in the mirror and are amazed with the results.

Step III: Camouflage Eye Disguise

Now that the skin is totally hydrated and prepped, I add step 3, my best selling concealer, Camouflage Eye Disguise. After steps 1 & 2, you can now use a lot more concealer than you normally would, sweeping it across under the eyes and on the lid as a base for eye shadow. You get far better, natural-looking coverage without worrying about accentuating fine lines. My Camouflage Eye Disguise concealer works on all skin types, colors, and tones. For best results, it is really important to use a sponge to blend it in, so I included sponges in the Beauty Ammo Kit for foolproof application.

Heather Mills & Kelly Ripa

Since launching the Beauty Ammo Kit, I have sold tens of thousands in spas and salons around the US. I’ve sold Beauty Ammo on HSN, Ideal Vitality TV in London and in Henri Bendel. While doing an event at Henri Bendel, I met Heather Mills, who was shopping with her make up artist. He was so impressed with my Beauty Ammo Kit that he immediately called Kelly Rippa’s make up artist to share the dramatic results.

Celebrities Using M.B. York’s Beauty Ammo Kit

I often get called onto sets to apply Beauty Ammo on celebrities such as Jane Lynch, Jamie Lee Curtis, Martin Sheen, Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Kevin Bacon before the make up team does their make up. I was also recently asked for Beauty Ammo for Valerie Bertinelli, Betty White, Jane Leeves and Wendy Malick on the set of Hot in Cleveland. Actors love Beauty Ammo because it makes them look great for hours and allows them to avoid the constant touching up of powder throughout the day, which usually leads to the accentuation of fine lines.

After training the Dancing With the Stars make up team on how to use Beauty Ammo, they said it made Chloris Lechman look 30 years younger. The makeup team said it is “definitely one of our beauty secrets that the entire cast and crew loves.” Even the judges, Carrie Ann, Leni and Bruno love Beauty Ammo!

Beauty Ammo Kit is Easy to Use at Home

Another great benefit of my Beauty Ammo Kit is that you can apply it by itself in less than one minute. Even if you don’t like to wear foundation or make up elsewhere on your face, your entire eye area will be hydrated, fresher and brighter all day long.

M.B. York’s Summer Makeup Ideas

Being based in Scottsdale, Arizona where temperatures can soar to 110 degrees in the summer, my specialty, as an esthetician and spa owner, is dealing with dry, dehydrated, sun damaged skin. Here is how I keep myself and my clients protected and perfected during the summer swelter.

Summer Makeup Products Should Include SPF

I am a big believer in layering sun protection, so if you sweat throughout the day you will still be protected. I always wear an oil free moisturizer with at least a 30 SPF, and apply it on my face and neck. You can also layer your day moisturizer or serum under a sunscreen or mix your sun care with a BB Cream. Out of the shower, instead of body lotion I use an SPF 30 on my arms, hands, and décolletage. This is part of my routine whether I plan on being in the sun or not. Next, I follow with an oil-free mineral tinted primer with a broad spectrum SPF 20 and blend it in with my fingers for maximum coverage. My clients that are golfers especially love this!

I personally like more coverage than a primer alone, so I then put a custom blended oil free foundation formula on top of the tinted primer, this time applying it with a sponge for more sheer coverage. My foundation has an additional SPF factor of 8, which isn’t enough alone, but over the moisturizer and primer is plenty.

The Right Summer Bronzer Creates a Natural Glow

Another must for summer is a bronzing powder to add a glow and set makeup. Powder will keep your foundation and primer from being absorbed into your skin and also gives you a more matte finish – a must for high temperatures. I apply it with a large brush for more sheer coverage and to keep the powder from accentuating fine lines and wrinkles. I like bronzers with some pink and yellow tones, which are hard to find. Most women look too orange from wearing yellow-based foundation and then an orange bronzer on top. Adding pink to foundation formulas and bronzing powders is a special trick I do to cut the yellow undertones in the skin and add a healthy, rosy-looking natural glow.

The Flattering Summertime Double Blush

Another technique I have for summer makeup application is my “Double Dip” tip. I have this amazing double blush that is the perfect rose on one half and universally-flattering bronze on the other. I mix them both together for blush, then use the bronze side alone for contouring around the jawline, and again as crease eyeshadow. You recreate this application technique with your favorite bronzer and rose-colored blush already in your makeup kit. I then add a very soft pink blush highlighter over the blush, straight down the center of the nose, and over the entire lid as eyeshadow base.

So basically these 2 “blush” products can be used as blush, highlighter, and eyeshadow. This makes it so fast and easy for summer, and is a perfect routine for travel as well.

Summer Lip Color

Finally, for lips, I use a rosy bronze lipstick and add a little bit of peachy/pink gloss with gold undertones on top. This way the blush, eyeshadow and lips are all in the same pinky/peach tones that look great on all skin tones, work with anything in your wardrobe and make you look fresh and young. Men especially love this look on women of all ages, since it is natural and soft yet illuminating.
