5 Ways To Nourish Your Skin This Winter

Winter is upon us. It’s getting cold and with the drop in temperature our skin can become dehydrated and more sensitive than usual. This time of year it is important to modify our beauty ritual to protect ourselves from the cold, crisp elements that we suddenly find ourselves in the midst of.

Don’t Wash Your Face

Try using a face wash at night only. In fact, in the morning don’t use a cleanser at all. Face cleansers can be drying especially in the context of chilly weather. This time of year I use Heaven Skincare EllaJane Celebrity Skin Wipes. These babies exfoliate, cleanse, tone and keep blemishes at bay with apple pectin, honey and peppermint oil, all without drying out the skin! These are gentle enough for those in their teens and twenties as well.

Exfoliate

I also use Lavido Gentle Exfoliator Peeling Cream twice a week. It might sound counter intuitive but it is essential to exfoliate during the winter as dead skin cells accumulate faster during the colder months. This face scrub utilizes oyster shell powder and pomegranate peel grains to gently slough away dead cells and buildup.

Moisturize

When the temperature drops, I turn to one of my all time favorite skin care lines, Cosmetics 27. It is an apothecary style range tailor-made for YOUR skin. The idea is to mix the products together to produce a formula that is right for your skin today. The change in season, weather, pollution, stress levels and even physiological factors can alter the behavior of skin. Cosmetics 27 utilizes the Ayurvedic properties of Centella Asiatica to boost the skin’s ability to regenerate and heal itself. While experimenting and getting to know your skin requires a little more time and effort, you’re worth it and your skin will thank you. Cosmetics 27 Baume 27 is a rich, almost balm textured moisturizer packed with anti-aging skin healing nutrients. It contains a patented cocktail of all natural ingredients that feed the skin what it needs to work optimally and renew itself. Best of all you will see results. I am 40 and have sensitive, dry skin so Baume 27 is my savior this time of year. Apply while skin is still a bit damp and take at least a full minute to massage it into your skin.

Layer It On

Just like we begin to layer clothing as the temperatures drop, similarly, we need to layer on skin care to nourish and provide our skin with the extra protection it needs. I can’t stress enough how important it is, especially if you don’t all year round, to add a serum and even a face oil to your regimen. I mix Cosmetics 27 Essence 27 and Huile 27 with Baume 27 to give the moisturizer an extra added boost of nutrients. Essence 27 is an ultra fine hydrating, anti-aging emulsion that brightens the complexion and increases the skin’s density. If you don’t typically use a serum, this is an excellent entrée into the genre. Then there is Huile 27. This anti-aging elixir is a master multitasker that provides essential nutrients that help rebalance skin functions and restructure the epidermal tissue. A must for those with dry or more mature skin. I also use it as a lip balm, hair and cuticle oil.

Lips

During the winter my lips look so chapped, it appears as though a wild animal has been gnawing on them. I layer Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream and Cosmetics 27 Huile 27 under a Lancome Juicy Tube. It takes a village. Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream is enriched with vitamin E, vitamin B2, and camphor and has a uniquely high glycerin content and absorbability achieved through a special manufacturing process. It even helps heal cold sores.

Top Lip Care Tips For All Seasons

Social media has helped focus a lot of attention on the lips these days, “the Kylie Jenner Effect”. Yes, these days we can easily inject filler in the office to make your lips more plump and kissable with little down time and minimal discomfort, but what’s the use if you don’t take care of what your mama gave you?

More than lip service

If I’m being honest, I probably remember sun protection for my lips 50% of the time when I plan for a beach day, and 0% of the time on a normal work day. This is not enough, and I know better. The skin over your lips is extremely thin and sensitive and requires extra attention to keep your pout sultry and healthy. Everyone knows about using SPF for their face and body, but ultraviolet radiation from the sun can really add up in the delicate skin over the lip leading to both aesthetic and medical problems.

How does sun exposure affect my lips?

Cosmetically, ultraviolet exposure can affect collagen production in the lips over time, and repeat exposure can lead to thinning of the lips and those vertical lines around the lips known as “smokers’ lines” (how ‘80s!). A chronic dry, cracked tender lip (the lower lip more commonly than the upper lip) can mean that you’ve developed “actinic cheilitis”, which, aside from not being pretty, is a precancerous condition that can develop into squamous cell cancer of the lips (yikes!). Other types of lip can cancer can develop too, including basal cell cancer. Those who have fairer skin, blond hair, blue eyes, or a history of skin cancers are most at risk, though we must all be vigilant.

Some great products to protect your lips all year long

Lips need extra loving in both the summer sun, and harsh winter air.  B. Kamins Laboratories Lip Balm SPF 20 UVA/UVB sunscreen helps prevent sun damage, including unsightly and uncomfortable lip sore breakouts and also helps to repair dry, chapped, sore lips once the damage is done.

Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream – this versatile cream from Japan can be used on both the lips and the body to help lighten your beauty regimen load. The rich balm is enriched with vitamin E, vitamin B2, and camphor, but without sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, petrochemicals or phthalates, so it’s suitable for even the most sensitive, and allergic.

Back to School Ready: Skin Care Edition

Our teens and wide-eyed college coeds are returning from sleepaway camp, teen tours and backpacking excursions in Europe and Asia. The 12 – 21 set has been so busy soaking up the sun, and god knows what else, that they are probably in need of a good facial to reset their skin. They have been so busy with summer activities that a daily skin care regimen has fallen to the bottom of the to do list. Our progeny have returned home with breakouts and post-summer skin irritation due to overexposure to the sun, perhaps sans proper protection and care.

Whether going back to school or off to university, it is a good time to start kids off with a simple custom regimen that will empower them to easily take care of their skin all year round. Yasmine Djerradine Institut de Beauté offers a Teenage Facial devised with teenage skin in mind.

A Cautionary Word of Warning

Young skin is sensitive. It is an imperative to select products that are gentle (organic is not always the answer – many organic products can be the harshest as they tend to have high concentrations of ingredients) on the skin. Products that are too harsh tend to be a major culprit contributing to adolescent skin irritation and spots.

Back To School Skin Care Regimen

In the spirit of keeping it simple, here are three easy, turnkey steps that are sure to work for all:

Step One: Cleanse

Lavido makes a gentle Purifying Face Cleanser that is specially formulated for sensitive skin. It is well suited for everyone and gently removes dead skin cells and impurities. For those in their late teens and early twenties, who wear makeup and are willing to take an extra step, I also suggest a post cleansing toner. Heaven Skincare EllaJane Celebrity Skin Wipes are ideal. It’s a toner in an easy to use wipe. They contain honey which heals and moisturizes as well as peppermint which balances the skin’s oil levels and keeps blemishes at bay. Wipes are my favorite, particularly for nighttime when everyone is tired and just wants to crawl into bed. Cleansing and moisturizing are most important at night as this is the time when the skin carries out its filtering activities at the cellular level.

Step Two: Moisturize

Alchimie Forever Daily Defense Cream SPF 23 is all natural, dermatologist-tested and vegan. This moisturizer is gentle and has a light SPF, which is beneficial all year long.

For young men that are about to start shaving or are already doing so, Ursa Major Traveler’s Skin Care Kit is an all encompassing try me kit containing a cleaner, toner, moisturizer/aftershave and toner soaked face wipes. Fortifying Face Balm is an ideal moisturizer and/or aftershave. It fights razor burn and irritation like a charm. Ursa Major’s individually wrapped Essential Face Wipes are perfect for use after gym class, as a late afternoon refresher or quick clean-up before bed.

Step Three: At Home Mini Facial

For those that will take the extra step, applying a mask once a week will do wonders. It is akin to an at home mini facial that will keep their skin clear all year long. Lavido Gentle Exfoliator Peeling Cream is meant to be a 2- 3 x per week gentle face scrub but I use it as a face mask. The formula contains oyster shell powder and pomegranate peel grains to turn over dead skin cells and buildup. It is extremely effective at unclogging pores but is gentle enough not to overdry skin. Plus, on days that it is used, it can be used as a 2-in-one cleanser and mask. Just apply, leave on for 5 – 10 minutes and rinse. Very easy.

Some Useful Extras

For teens that find themselves with blemishes, B. Kamins Laboratories Blemish Gel 5% is the perfect spot treatment to dab onto affected areas. It delivers the right amount of medicine in a lower dose than other over the counter treatments and will not irritate or overdry skin.

Additionally, Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream is a no brainer. With the change of season and school stress, everyone can use a new lip balm to kick off the school year with a stunning smile!

All of these products will take you and your teens through fall and into winter seamlessly.

7 Ways to Winterproof Your Skin

With winter just around the corner we asked Tomoko Takeda Canel, editorial beauty editor who has most recently served as a senior beauty editor at People StyleWatch and Seventeen Magazines, for her top winter skin care tips.

Ditch Your Bubbly Cleanser

Your go-to foamy wash is fine during the summer, but once it gets nippy, anything that lathers can strip skin of its natural oils. So switch to a soap-free, creamy wash or a cleansing balm like Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm. It degunks and removes makeup like a dream.

Supercharge Your Moisturizer

Generally speaking, the thicker the formula, the more hydrating it is. But it’s important to look at the ingredients too. Usually the best ones have one or more of the following: glycerin, hyaluronic acid and ceramides. For AM, I like CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion because it has SPF 30 and works well under makeup. For PM, my skin drinks up Philosophy Back to Nurture Replenishing Moisture Creme.

Exfoliate—But Don’t Go Crazy

If you don’t buff away that top layer of dead skin, all that good stuff in your moisturizer won’t absorb well. But if you overdo it, it can have the opposite effect, leaving your face dry, tight and irritated. So the key is to pick a gentle scrub like Yu-Be Foaming Skin Polish and just use it whenever your skin looks blah—once or twice a week, tops.

Bathe Strategically

You don’t need me to remind you that long, hot showers are a big, dehydrating no-no. But did you know that you don’t need to wash your entire body every single day? Just clean the areas that really need it (underarms, private parts), and let the runoff lather take care of the rest. It might sound icky, but that way your arms and legs won’t dry out as much. Lavido Intoxicating Body Wash is ideal for winter – just enough suds but extremely mild. Its spa-like scent is the perfect pick-me up on cold winter days.

Follow The 3-Minute Rule

So you just got out of the shower. Now pat skin dry and apply a moisturizer while your skin’s still damp. Dermatologists say you have three minutes to lock in maximum hydration. But have you tried that? The moisturizer can get all goopy and take forever to absorb! So that’s why I’m loving Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer with Calming Green Tea Oil. It’s meant to go on wet skin, so it goes on evenly and sinks in fast.

Stash Lip Balm Everywhere

It’s all about having one when you need it, so keep one on your nightstand, in every purse, your office, car, winter coat pockets…you get the idea. Pick something thick that comes in a pot or tube. Derms swear by Aquaphor.

Don’t Forget Your Tootsies

Nothing says let’s cuddle like dry, calloused feet, right? A rich foot cream is obviously a good idea, but don’t forget to exfoliate beforehand. I’ve been really into foot peels—have you heard about these? (One to try: Baby Foot) They’re plastic booties that you wear for 90 minutes, then rinse. Several days later, your calluses starts to shed off slowly in sheets (gross, but so satisfying!).

Sun or Snow Vacation & Packing the Proper Skin Care

With winter vacation plans getting underway, we thought we’d pull this fabulous blog by Yasmine Djerradine, out of the archives. Expert advice on how to make sure we take care of ourselves and have exactly what we need on vacation is always welcomed – especially in the product department. Hoping that you will find this as helpful as we do.

The Travel Beauty Team

——————————

Winter is upon us, which for many means traveling. Whether you are off to the slopes of St. Moritz or the sands of St. Barths, packing proper skin care is essential!

Going to the Beach?

Be sure to have a sunscreen for face and body that will protect your skin from the sun – one that is easy to reapply after a dip in the ocean. Everyone is unique and reacts to the elements differently. Sun tends to accelerate the skin’s aging process. Bring B. Kamins Laboratories Sun Defense SPF 30 for face, neck and décolleté. It not only protects you from the harmful rays of the sun, but also guards against premature wrinkles that can result from sun exposure.

For Body

Pack Institut Esthederm Adaptasun Sea and Tropics Body Lotion SPF 20. Adaptasun ensures safe prolonged sun exposure in severe conditions, including the intense tropical sun. It allows a deep, intense natural tan to develop without any harmful UV damage. Adaptasun is formulated with UV in-Cellium Technology to protect the skin from the inside by strengthening its self-defense systems. This hi-tech sunscreen is also extremely moisturizing, and can be used as your primary body moisturizer during your trip, making it a multi-tasking skin care product ideal for traveling light.

Let’s Not Forget…

If you can’t make it to the spa before your trip, here is a great tip:

pack Bliss Poetic Waxing Strips for Body! They are superb for use on legs and other bits that might be in need of a fleecing. The wax is spa-quality and can be quickly warmed by rubbing in between your hands. These strips are very convenient and easy to use on the go – even in your hotel room.

Going Skiing?

Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean that you are safe from the sun’s harmful rays. In addition to the sun, strong winds and bitter cold can also attack skin, breaking down its defenses and leading to further damage. I recommend applying a hearty anti-aging serum, like B. Kamins Laboratories Nia-Stem Serum Kx. This unique formulation includes:

  • Niacin
  • Plant stem cells
  • The exclusive Bio-Maple® Compound

This unique combination minimizes the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and age spots. It detoxifies skin cells to reveal bright, even-toned and younger-looking skin. Follow the serum with a great moisturizing facial sunscreen, like B. Kamins Laboratories Sun Defense SPF 30. This is a perfect duo to protect your face as you as plow down the mountain.

For Lips

Whether you’ll be seeing sand or snow, be sure to pack B. Kamins Laboratories SPF 20 Lip Balm as well. In extreme cold, wind or sun, lips are usually the first place to suffer. Just a few minutes of exposure to extreme weather can lead to days of chapped, cracked lips. Reapply your lip balm frequently to keep your lips comfortable and protected all day and night.

Bon Voyage!
