The Idiot’s Guide To Applying Eye Makeup

Having done the makeup of thousands of women over the years, I can say with authority that most women have no idea how to apply eye makeup. I hear it from every woman I work on and see it firsthand when they sit in my makeup chair. They are either:

  • unclear what looks good on them and how to apply it so they do little or nothing OR
  • have a set routine that they do every day that is not flattering…yet they don’t know it’s not flattering!

How We Get Stuck in Bad Makeup Routines

Often, women will be attached to a liquid liner, or some kind of frosty shadow combination that they apply every day without fail, and have no idea how to break the cycle – or that they even need to break the cycle! At one point or another, many women had a department store makeover. Usually, the amount of colors used during this makeover – and inability of the salesperson to teach them how to duplicate the look at home – results in a half-baked makeover attempt that is utterly lacking, yet still becomes a woman’s routine for the next 10 years.

Keep it Simple

I am shocked that most women who apply lots of shadow seem to think it looks good, when more often than not, it actually makes them look worse. This, in my opinion, is why most men don’t like makeup. They see so many women applying makeup heavy-handedly in all the wrong places, using all the wrong colors and all the wrong tools. I always wonder why no one tells these women that their makeup is wrong and making them look older and/or desperate and/or or cheap. Especially older women, who seem to be especially stuck in their ways and don’t know who to trust to help them update their look.

One of the biggest obstacles is that there are waaaay too many options out there, leaving a lot of room for error. If you go into a store, you have to trust the salesperson that is picking the colors for you. I am shocked when I walk through the enormous makeup department at Bergdorf Goodman and see so many salespeople, who badly need makeovers themselves, giving makeovers to customers! Who do you trust? If you do get lucky and have a talented makeup artist doing your makeover, you are then faced with a multitude of colors, brushes, not to mention a huge bill, if you have the courage to attempt the look yourself at home. Maybe you spring for just one of the shadows, or just the liner. Then when applying the makeup at home, you wish you had spent the money on all the products because you loved looking that good and feel hopeless that you’ll ever be able to recreate the look yourself.

Enter Paint By Number Eyeshadow Kit

It is with these issues in mind that I created my Paint by Numbers Eyeshadow Kit.  It will be featured on The Today Show on January 26th! This eyeshadow kit comes with a makeup palette containing 6 shadows, all numbered 1, 2, or 3. There’s a row for daytime and a row for night. It also comes with 3 brushes, also numbered 1, 2, and 3, and a foolproof diagram showing you exactly where each color goes. I have created the perfect base, crease, and liner colors that work on all skin types, tones and eye colors.

An Eyeshadow Palette That Works for Everyone

My client’s loyalty, rave reviews and amazing looking eyes prove the concept works. It is so important that a base color not be too light, too dark, too pink or too peach. You want it to be the perfect base to make the eye open and pop, without making lids look wrinkled. The crease colors I created are more like blush colors, kind of a soft champagne bronze that opens the eye but doesn’t distract from your natural beauty. The shadow liners I created also compliment all eye colors, work with anything in your wardrobe and make you look younger and more vibrant. I sold these same shadows separately for years before creating the kit, and every woman I put them on would buy them. I would always draw the diagram, and write exactly which brush to use. A lot of times they would say they already had brushes, but if they didn’t buy them from me would more often than not come back and say it just doesn’t look the same as when I did it.

Everything You Need for Easy Makeup Application

I decided to include everything in one eyeshadow kit: diagram, shadows and brushes to simplify the process and make it easy and fun. The whole eyeshadow application should take a couple minutes, tops! My clients come back and tell me this is the first time they have ever had their makeup done and been able to recreate the look at home. Plus, the kit is great for travel!

Everyone gets tired of fishing each color out of her makeup bag, opening and closing all the lids, and digging out the right brushes. This little book-shaped eyeshadow kit opens up with everything neat and organized. My clients love being able to throw out all their old colors.

The Paint By Numbers Eyeshadow Kit is also truly multi-generational. My best friend who is in her 40s uses it along with her 15 year old daughter and 65 year old mom. And they all have different hair and eye colors! What better way to bond with your daughter or mom than sharing your newest beauty secrets?!

Questioning Yellow Based Foundations

Having worked on thousands of women, I can often identify certain brands of foundation solely based on their distinct yellow hue on my clients’ skin. Many luxury brands offer a sea of different variations of yellow. Though yellow tones work well on Asian women, most of my clientele is Caucasian and with few exceptions have more pink in their skin. Ideally, an equal amount of pink and yellow is needed for a balanced, healthy glow.

Foundation 101

I have been custom blending foundation formulas for over 20 years, and currently add fuchsia toner to almost every single one because it cuts the yellow in the skin and subtly adds pink, which looks healthier and less jaundice-like. Almost every woman that sits in my chair has a yellow formula foundation like I am describing. When I remove it and show them the difference that adding pink makes, they are stunned! The problem is there are far too many formulas on the market that shouldn’t be available to anyone. Because of this, purchasing foundation at a department store is very risky. So much so that only one in ten of my clients is wearing a foundation that is appropriate for her skin tone. I also like to go a tiny bit on the darker side to give clients a little more color in addition to adding pink which achieves a rosier bronze glow.

Bonzers and Powders

The same is true of bronzers and translucent powders so I have created one that is more pink-toned as well. When worn over my custom blended foundation it adds another layer of subtle color correction. The pink hue cuts the yellow undertone in the powder. This is especially helpful for blondes who already have a lot of yellow tones in their hair. Pink brightens and lifts the skin without having to depend on an orangey bronzer that might not be the right shade for you.

Concealer

The one place yellow tones are appropriate is in concealer. Usually the skin color is a little lighter under the eyes, and when you go too light on the concealer it ends up highlighting dark circles and drawing attention to them—AKA the raccoon look. A yellow based concealer blends into the skin more easily and should disappear to look like you are wearing nothing at all. My Beauty Ammo Kit includes three secret weapons for a flawless eye area.

Next time you are on your way to the overwhelming world of department store makeup counters, head to M.B. York instead and have a color custom blended for just $45. Book and appointment at Jo Paris Salon, 14202 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85258.

End of Summer Beauty Overhaul

By the end of summer, your skin may be tanned, but the rest of you could probably use a total beauty overhaul. Now that the kids are back in school, you may just have enough time to yourself for a spa day…the next best thing to a beach day. Don’t know where to start? We’ve got some suggestions (of course).

Hair and Scalp Care

During summer, we all want to suck the marrow out of the sunlight hours. Kids’ bedtime might have become a bit lax in favor of franks and fireworks. If you’ve been sleeping less and not eating as healthfully as you usually do, your hair and scalp may pay the price. If sunburned skin isn’t the only thing you’re shedding, you may want to plan a visit to Philip Kingsley’s NYC Clinic. Whether you need a deep moisturizing treatment or a complete hair and scalp overhaul, book an appointment with Elizabeth and team to get your scalp and strands back in shape.

Also, pick up an Elasticizer and Scalp Toner. Used 1-2 times per week, this award-winning hair and scalp mask is akin to an at-home hair moisturizing treatment. Explore Kingsley’s other award winning hair care products.

Facials & Skin Care

If you have let your skin care routine slide over the summer, now is the perfect time to repent for your summer skin sins. Make an appointment at Yasmine Djerradine Institut de Beauté on the Upper East Side ASAP. If you live anywhere in the Tri-state area, it is absolutely worth the trip. If you can’t get in to see Yasmine, we recommend Lily or Karen. A remodeling facial or power peel are the perfect treatments to restore your complexion and slough off the layers of skin that have had their share of elemental damage from a summer outdoors. Also, recommit to a regular routine of cleansingmoisturizing and applying an undereye cream and/or serum morning and night. It’s never too late to turn back the hands of time.

Brows And ‘Stache

While you are at Yasmine Djerradine Spa, make sure to maximize your time by minimizing your facial hair. Your eyebrows really do frame your face; well-shaped brows allow you to wear minimal makeup to provide an overall polished look. We mustache you a question: Are you worried waxing your lip will strip the elasticity from the skin around it? Don’t worry, it won’t! Sorry to break the news, but you are not fooling anyone by dying your mustache blond. The hair is still there and visible…it’s just blonde,

Makeup Lesson

Once a year, it’s worth it to have your makeup done professionally. Even if you have your routine down pat, you can learn a new trick or two that can kick your look up a notch! For those of us in the Tri-state area who can’t get to LA or Scottsdale to see M.B. York, stop in to see Karou at Salon Ishi. She will not only do a flawless application for you, but also show you how to create the look yourself and make a list of exactly what she used so that you can recreate the look at home.

Nail Care

There is only one place in NYC that Travel Beauty entrusts with our fingers and *especially* our toes: Celina Nails. Located on the Upper West Side, this mani mecca is the cure for the common pedicure. Celina’s team of Eastern European pedi professionals painstakingly care for your feet with surgical precision. A few flicks of their files and these ladies could turn Frodo into foot fetishist fodder. (By the way, if your soles really do look straight out of the Shire after a summer in the sand, you can request the private room on the second floor.)

Visit our RGB Cosmetics collection of non-toxic nail polishes to see the colors that we are loving now, and scrub your soles yourself at home with Yu-Be Foaming Skin Polish.

Don’t Let Go of Your Summer Glow

Prolong your sun-kissed look with a sunless tanning session at Euphoria Spa in Tribeca. Consistently awarded in Allure’s Best of Beauty, the tans here are always impeccably done. In a few minutes flat you’ll have a natural bronzy glow that we promise will have you add an extra sway to your step. Can’t get to the spa? Try our self-tanning products.

“Bach” To School

We know back to school time isn’t all makeup and manicures. Stress is inevitable in September. The multiple runs to Staples alone are enough to make anyone consider homeschooling! When it all seems too much, be sure to have some Bach’s Rescue Remedy on hand…and/or in purse! Just a few sprays will help you stay cool calm and collected, no matter how many backpacks your daughter says she hates until she deems one “tolerable”. There is also a kids’ formula to help quell kids’ first day jitters.

Beauty and the Brush

You wouldn’t use a toothbrush on your hair and you couldn’t use a hair brush to paint your home, right? But most women still don’t use the proper brush when applying their makeup.

One of the most important parts of makeup application is using the right tools…especially the right brush. The smallest difference in brush size, shape or stiffness can greatly affect how different products go on and ultimately how you look.

Size Matters

Having done makeup on thousands of women, here’s what I often see: I’ll do a woman’s eye makeup, then draw them an eye and show them exactly what brush type is needed for each step so they can recreate the look at home. But more often than not, women buy the eye shadow but not the right brush, saying they already have the right brushes at home. Then they return, frustrated, saying that when they did their makeup using my eye shadows at home with their brushes, it never looks the same as when I did it. I’ve seen similar problems with shadow liner brushes. If the brush is too fluffy it will not deliver a strong enough line of color. The same with an angle crease brush. If it’s the right size, you can easily put it on the outer third of your eye and bring it around in the perfect place. If it’s not the right size…

Blush or Powder Brush?

Brush choices, and the importance of using the right ones in makeup application, aren’t just limited to your eyes. I know from experience that most of the women I’ve worked with think that a blush brush is a powder brush. However, the bigger the brush, the sheerer the color goes on, which is why powder brushes are so big. If you use a blush brush to apply a bronzer or powder formula of any kind and put it all over your face, you’ll end up with streaks of color and a very caked-on look. The same goes for the application of blush. If your blush brush is the right size and shape, there is little room for error, but if you’re using one of those tiny brushes that are often found inside blush compacts, you’ll have a thick stripe of blush that’s either too high or low, and most likely too bright.

Now, you can avoid these common brushes with disaster with my new Weapons of Mass Seduction Brush Kit. A best seller on TV Shopping Networks, it features 6 different vegan brushes that are the perfect application tools for a variety of makeup applications. The kit also includes simple instructions on how to use each brush. These brushes work seamlessly with my product line including my Beauty Ammo and Paint by Numbers Kits, as well as yours, and the result is simply beautiful makeup application every time.

Makeup and Foundation Tips From MB York

Foundation Information: Wear It Well

Maybe you’ve been going light on makeup and foundation over the warmer summer months, as we have, but as we transition into fall weather here are some great tips from M.B. York on getting your foundation and eye makeup just right.

—————

To Wear Or Not To Wear?

Foundation is one of the most important steps of makeup application (after my Beauty Ammo Kit – more on that in a bit). Getting the color right is crucial. If you are trusting the wrong lighting, wrong salesperson, or wrong formula, there is a lot of room for error. In my 20 years of custom blending foundations, here is what I’ve found:

Many formulas are too yellow. One way to correct this is add a small amount of fuchsia toner to a foundation. Ideally, you want an equal amount of pink and yellow in your skin, and I often have to “de-orange” women’s foundation.

Most women don’t want to look too pale, and there can be added issues like rosacea or freckles, on top of fair skin. Do you go lighter like the base, darker like the freckles or somewhere in between?  Most women want some color in their skin, and look best with a slightly darker formula.

I prefer an oil-free liquid formula: They are easiest to apply and look most natural.

How To Apply

Another mistake women make is blending foundation in their fingers. It ends up looking and feeling too heavy on the skin, and if the color isn’t perfect to begin with, it will sit on top of the skin. It’s best to use a sponge to blend foundation in. You want to get the coverage you need while looking like you have nothing on. Dot the foundation formula on your nose, forehead, chin and on each cheek, and then blend it all in with the sponge. The right color liquid foundation, correctly applied with a sponge, is the secret to beautiful skin. When your skin looks great, you can get away with wearing a lot less make up. One more secret? My Beauty Ammo Kit.

Beauty Ammo Kit: Your Eye Area Arsenal

My 3 step Beauty Ammo Kit is all you need for a flawless eye area. Here’s why:

Most eye creams just absorb into your skin. If you follow with concealer, powder or foundation, the makeup collects in the fine lines and actually makes your wrinkles more pronounced.

  • Step 1 of the Beauty Ammo Kit, Collagen Eye Mask, is a thick, rich base that stays on all day. It contains collagen and shea butter to provide serious hydration.
  • Step 2, Line Putty, goes right on top of the Collagen Eye Mask, and fills in fine lines while it soothes skin with chamomile and witch hazel.
  • Step 3 is my Dual Action Concealer. Once you have the rich base provided by steps 1 and 2, you can use a lot more concealer to get the coverage you need without worrying about it caking, creasing and making fine lines look worse. You can also use the concealer on your eyelid as a great base for your eye shadow.

Be sure to check out the rest of the Travel Beauty Blog for more tips on getting great-looking skin.
