How To Grow Longer, Healthier Hair

I attended Salon International in London this weekend, and a predominant question I received from women was “why won’t my hair grow?” This wasn’t entirely surprising as long locks are highly coveted, but the lack of knowledge regarding what might be causing lackluster lock growth was quite eye opening! If you are one of the many women who have this question, it’s important to realise that your hair is, in fact, growing, even if it seems to be staying the same length. What is also happening is that it’s either falling out or breaking before it reaches the point you want it to.

Firstly, how long your hair is able to grow is largely down to the genetic card you were dealt. On average, hair can sustain growth for 4 years, although in some it can be as much as 7. As hair grows on average half an inch a month, this means that most people’s hair growth cycle allows for hair to reach around 24 inches in length, which is actually pretty long! While there’s nothing you can do to change your pre-determined growth cycle, there are definitely things that can disrupt it – and therefore various methods of optimising the potential of your tresses.

Diet

Hair is non-essential tissue so it’s given last dibs on the nutrients you intake. Cut out any food group and your follicles basically throw in the towel on supporting growth. Diets lacking iron, protein, Vitamin B12 and complex carbohydrates are most commonly to blame, so check that you are in-taking enough of these. Also, make sure that if there is a big gap between meals to snack on a healthy carbohydrate, such as fresh fruit. Energy levels to your follicles drop 4 hours after eating, so they often need a boost!

Breakage

Hair that is overly processed and lacks moisture will break – and breakage equals loss of length. Depending on the level of damage, this breakage could occur anywhere from a few inches from your scalp to just past your shoulders. In this instance, you need to restore elasticity to your locks to help it reach the desired length. Use a pre-shampoo conditioner, such as Philip Kingsley Elasticizer twice weekly, and a protective conditioning spray, such as Daily Damage Defence, every day. Also, try to keep the use of straighteners to a minimum and ask your colourist to be especially careful not to overlap previous applications.

Hormones

Conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can shorten the duration of your hair growth cycle, as well as increased hair loss, and hair not seeming to grow. Other symptoms can include acne, oily skin, increased facial hair, weight gain and tiredness. Get a yearly medical to check your hormone levels – there are very effective prescription medications to manage imbalances. Similarly, some birth control pills can have this effect if your follicles are sensitive to certain hormones. If you notice your hair is falling out or thinning at the ends 6-12 weeks after starting the pill, talk to your doctor. As a general rule, Yasmin and Dianette are the most ‘hair friendly’ out of all the pills – and are sometimes even used to treat hair thinning.

Scalp

A healthy scalp optimises healthy hair growth! If you notice your scalp is itchy or flaky, use products that will promptly nip it in the bud and revitalise your scalp environment. I suggest our Take Comfort Jet Set, which contains a soothing scalp toner, a highly effective shampoo and a moisture balancing conditioner.

Our Hairoes Hair Care Kit

Do you ever feel better than you do when your hair looks fabulous? All seems right in the world when all looks good on our heads. Unfortunately, short of seeking professional help, having our hair consistently look fabulous can be a crap shoot. Until now! The products in this kit can turn any mane into a masterpiece. At Travel Beauty, we have taken a stab at putting together a hair care kit filled with off the beaten path products that we’ve found work wonders for most. This collection of hair heroes (a term coined by Philip Kingsley) have become Our Hair-oes. We hope that they will be yours as well.

Let’s take Our Hair Care Collection From the Top…of Your Head

We start with shampoo, of course. Humid weather can cause even the sleekest hair to frizz up. Though we usually rely on styling and finishing products to defrizz, you can start the job with the proper shampoo. Caretrico Moist Bounce Shampoo contains an amino acid that actually rebuilds the hair’s ability to retain water. Greater water retention means smoother, silkier, shinier hair…less frizz, less fuzz. This shampoo is an absolute lifesaver for anyone who highlights his or her hair.

Under One Conditioner

Philip Kingsley’s award-winning Elasticizer deserves all the accolades it’s received over the years. We love it so because it is as versatile as it is effective. Though it was created as the world’s first pre-shampoo conditioning treatment, Elasticizer can be used pre-shampoo (for fine hair), post-shampoo or as a leave-in conditioning/styling treatment (for thick hair), depending on your hair type and condition. We know because we’ve tried them all with great success!

What exactly does it do? The name really says it all. When hair is healthy, it stretches when wet before returning to its original length when dry. Hair in poor condition, however, snaps and breaks when stretched because it lacks elasticity. Elasticizer delivers mega-moisture to the hair’s cuticle, adding suppleness, elasticity and bounce that are visible after just one use. Unlike many deep conditioning treatments, it won’t weigh down or coat even the finest hair.

Usually, we put our conditioner in our hair and leave it sitting there while we tend to other shower tasks. The nifty Du-Boa Ceramide 2+ Ion Scalp Massager lets you take a more active role in your hair care. It perfectly distributes conditioning treatments throughout your hair so every strand feels the love. It’s a must-have for dry, damaged and/or processed hair. This massager stimulates the scalp, increasing circulation and contains cleansing negative ions to help remove scalp build-up from treatments and styling products. This is one deep cleaning chore we actually look forward to!

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention Vine Minus Ion Care Water, though we know we mention it a lot! This truly amazing hair and skin priming spray is a super-booster for all other products you use, and is always our first step of hair styling. It also adds moisture and volume and feels super-refreshing. We take a travel-friendly bottle of it with us wherever we go.

Hair Care Expert Philip Kingsley: The Proper Way to Blow Dry Hair

Blow dryers have become an indispensable styling tool to women (and men) everywhere. We here at Travel Beauty would certainly never underestimate the positive effects of a beautiful blowout! Unfortunately, constant blow drying can damage hair, making it look less beautiful over time. What to do, what to do?!

We asked legendary Trichologist and Travel Beauty Expert Philip Kingsley for his sage advice on blow dryer best practices so we can style as safely as possible. You’ll be surprised to hear his stance on blow dry styling – read on!

If you like what you read, please visit Philip’s expert page on Travel Beauty to read more invaluable hair and scalp advice from Mr. Kingsley. Blow Dryer Q & A

Q: Should blow dryers be eliminated?

A: Definitely not! The blow dryer is an excellent tool to help style the hair in the way that is most pleasing. Hair is deeply psychological and a hairstyle you are happy with is a great morale booster.

The poor blow dryer has been unfairly blamed for many hair problems: hair loss, dry hair, breaking hair, dull hair…just to name a few.  However, with correct use, the blow dryer does no damage at all.  It should be held a minimum of 9 inches away from the hair, and as the hair dries, the heat should be reduced until the hair is just dried – not longer.  Damage occurs when the dryer is kept on after the hair has dried.  This will result in the moisture content of the hair cells being depleted – and can lead to breakage and dullness. You can also help protect your hair with a heat protective conditioning spray, like Daily Damage Defence. (If the dryer damage is already done, weekly deep conditioning treatments with Elasticizer will go a long way in restoring hair health.)

Furthermore, it’s important to remember that the styling brush you use can do a great deal of damage. I have seen many cases where excessive pulling of the hair and scratching of the scalp has resulted in mass hair breakage and traction hair loss, as well as a sore (and sometimes damaged) scalp. In terms of the hair, it is technically dead tissue once grown, and therefore does not regenerate itself once damaged like the cells of your skin do. Hair needs to be treated with consideration! Careful use of both brush and blow dryer will give you happy hair days!

Philip Kinglsey Hair Care Elasticizer: A How-To Guide For All Hair Types

We have been raving about Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer for months. It has not only won numerous awards, but also is the go-to hair hero for celebrities, stylists, beauty editors and The Travel Beauty Team! Elasticizer was developed in the 70s by Philip Kingsley for iconic actress Audrey Hepburn. Audrey sought Philip’s help as her hair had taken a beating due to years of on-set over-processing. Audrey’s condition prompted Philip to formulate Elasticizer, which recently celebrated its 40th birthday.

Intensive Moisturizing Hair Treatment

This pre-shampoo, intensive moisturizing treatment is magic! It delivers elasticity, bounce and shine to all hair types.

Elasticizer has been a life saver for the highlight-loving Travel Beauty Team. We wanted to share a quick how-to guide, as we have received many questions about how to apply Elasticizer at home. (Though if you can get to Philip’s Trichological Clinic in New York City or London- definitely do!)

Step-by-Step How-To-Guide

  • Lightly dampen hair with hands
  • Apply Elasticizer in sections, smoothing on the top of your hair and then working it into hair in sections with your whole hand
    • Fine & medium textured hair apply sparingly through mid lengths and ends – two to three times a month
    • Coarse, wavy, curly or frizzy hair use more generously through entire hair length – once or twice a week
  • Leave in for 10-20 minutes…or longer
    • We have gone to the gym and played golf with Elasticizer on- just put hair in a bun after you apply the product and be on your way
    • It’s safe to leave Elasticizer in all day or sleep with it overnight under a shower cap
  • Rinse well and follow with appropriate shampoo, conditioner and scalp toner

When to Use on Processed Hair

  • Fine & medium textured hair – use once a week
  • Coarse, wavy, curly or frizzy hair – use twice a week
  • Wait a day or two after your color or processing treatment before applying this product

Experiment with Elasticizer

Can also be used to style hair – this is something we learned through experimentation! It gives great frizz-free definition to curls & can be used to achieve a piecey ends look on an edgy bob.

Have a kid with curly-ques? A little Elasticizer makes a great leave-in conditioner and detangler.

Have YOU conducted a successful Elasticizer experiment? Do tell, please! We would love to share your tip with the Travel Beauty community.
