Sage Advice From Our Favorite Girl Bosses

advice from girl bosses

Team Travel Beauty has had the opportunity to speak with many fascinating women entrepreneurs. Some of them newly-minted with recently launched businesses and others 30 year industry veterans. Hearing these women’s stories of how they got their starts – the ups, the downs and the everything in between has given us invaluable perspective and inspiration.

Often, when something seems scary, we think of everything that could go wrong, everything that’s at risk…and seeing these things, we say NO WAY. Well, here are some quotes from women who went for it and not only survived, but thrived.

Liz Lange, Founder of Liz Lange Maternity

On what she attributes her success to: Luck of course, hard work and an optimistic outlook. To be a successful entrepreneur you have to not let problems deter you. I always believe that there’s a solution for everything and that anything can be accomplished. I don’t let negativity enter into my thinking.

Brenda Christian, Founder of Brenda Christian Cosmetics

On the magic of having someone champion you: Though my business is now 32 years old, it seems like yesterday that I made the decision to become a professional makeup artist. I was young and energetic, and within a few months was booked solid, traveling and doing fashion show work. Still, my greatest love was teaching a woman, one-on-one, how to apply her makeup. Regarding the development of my brow products, that is quite a story! Early on I became the go-to person for brow shaping in Houston. I adored working with my clients, but felt weak in adding to eyebrows to fill voids, or even more terrifying, creating an eyebrow where absolutely no hair existed. I could not find a product that worked well, and felt insecure about my work.

About that time, I enrolled in a three day course for experienced makeup artists offered by Maurice Stein, a well-known Hollywood makeup artist. The first day of the course, he tested each student. After the practical testing, Maurice pulled me away from the rest of the class and asked me why I was working in Houston and not California! I explained that my goal was not to become a television and cinema makeup artist, but to develop products formulated to work in extreme climatic conditions, like the heat and humidity of Houston. I told him I was working on a product to create eyebrows on women that had none.

For three days Maurice taught me separately from the rest of the class—how to create beautiful eyebrows on women that had none. At the end of the class, Maurice asked me if I would show the products that I had been working on to Harry Blake, Director of Makeup for NBC Studios. Both men were excited about the potential of the new wax I had developed and encouraged me to share the products with them upon completion. Today, I am honored that Maurice sells my eyebrow products in his Cinema Secrets store in California, and I have always been grateful for his support and artistic training.

Julia Samersova, Founder of Cast Inc.

On making the jump: I had been working as a model manager for close to 12 years. I had worked at four agencies (Elite, Ford, Company Management and Next). In 2004, I decided to make the jump to the client side and become a freelance casting director. My best friend John Pfeiffer, Casting Director legend, took me to J&R Music World and bought me my first laptop. John and my mom encouraged me to do my own thing. I jumped into the shallow pool with my eyes closed and wished for the best! I had nothing to lose. I was not operating from a place of fear, so it all fell into place! The first year was tough financially and I had to borrow money just to survive. Gradually, through networking, word of mouth and sheer perseverance I started to flourish! The better I did, the more driven I became.

Gilah Gurovitsch, Founder of GG Skin & GG Candles

On evolving her business: I have been a practicing esthetician for almost two decades. I’m known for my signature facials that incorporate my healing arts into each treatment. All my treatments have always been customized for each individual—for the needs of the skin at that moment. As a single mother of two young girls, at times I found it very difficult to provide for them. This lead me to think out of the box with my business. One day I was in a treatment, and as always, burning a random candle. I was staring at the candlelight and thought, what if I made my own candles? I could start an all natural environmentally friendly line. GG Candles was born.

Gina Antioco, Co-Founder of Lift / Next Level Floats

On making it through tough times: My journey at times has been challenging and exhausting. In the beginning, I worked at a hostel so that I had somewhere rent-free to sleep, and volunteered at a startup float center that couldn’t yet afford staff. This is how I learned the ins and outs. I worked seven days a week and my only income was unemployment. I ate at a “community dinner” and received assistance at a food kitchen. There was no easy shortcut and I was determined not to dip into my savings. It made me stronger and I learned many of the skills that would help me run a business.

Robin Shobin, Founder of Charlotte’s Book

On perspective: The hardest part is not putting too much pressure on yourself. Making mistakes is inevitable when you’re doing something completely new. Unfortunately that’s easier said than done. It can be very stressful when you’re taking so much personal and financial risk. But you have to occasionally take a step back. It’s important to find the balance of maintaining your vision, but also being flexible and able to pivot in your path, because it will likely never be what you planned.

Blow Drying & The Beautiful Blowout

healthy blow drying and blowouts

Though some members of the Travel Beauty team have sworn off blow dryers, we know such a stance is not a viable option for everyone. Blow dryers have become an indispensable styling tool to women (and men) everywhere. We here at Travel Beauty would certainly never underestimate the positive effects of a beautiful blowout! Unfortunately, constant blow drying can damage hair, making it look less beautiful over time. What to do, what to do?!

We asked legendary Trichologist and Travel Beauty Expert Philip Kingsley for his sage advice on blow dryer best practices so we can style as safely as possible. You’ll be surprised to hear his stance on blow dry styling! Read on…

Q: Should blow dryers be eliminated from my hair routine?

A: Definitely not! The blow dryer is an excellent tool to help style the hair in the way that is most pleasing. Hair is deeply psychological and a hairstyle you are happy with is a great morale booster.

The poor blow dryer has been unfairly blamed for many hair problems: hair loss, dry hair, breaking hair, dull hair…just to name a few. However, with correct use, the blow dryer does no damage at all. It should be held a minimum of 9 inches away from the hair, and as the hair dries, the heat should be reduced until the hair is just dried – not longer. Damage occurs when the dryer is kept on after the hair has dried. This will result in the moisture content of the hair cells being depleted – and can lead to breakage and dullness. You can also help protect your hair with a heat protective conditioning spray, like Daily Damage Defence. (If the dryer damage is already done, weekly deep conditioning treatments with Elasticizer will go a long way in restoring hair health.)

Furthermore, it’s important to remember that the styling brush you use can do a great deal of damage. I have seen many cases where excessive pulling of the hair and scratching of the scalp has resulted in mass hair breakage and traction hair loss, as well as a sore (and sometimes damaged) scalp. In terms of the hair, it is technically dead tissue once grown, and therefore does not regenerate itself once damaged like the cells of your skin do. Hair needs to be treated with consideration! Careful use of both brush and blow dryer will give you happy hair days!

Must Have Shaving & Skin Care Products for Men

mens skincare shaving products

We usually focus on the ladies here at Travel Beauty, but men, we want you to know you (and your skin) are on our minds as well. We’ve recently added new men’s grooming items from two of our favorite brands, and we’d like to introduce them to you – we think you just might like them.

Binchotan Charcoal Shaving Gel

The first product is the latest creation from Japan’s Binchotan Charcoal. Binchotan charcoal seems to make every product with which it is infused exponentially better and more effective. Why? Known as the highest quality activated charcoal for purifying water, Binchotan charcoal can be used to absorb chemicals in tap water, remove toxins from the skin, capture moisture and odors from the air, enhance blood circulation in a hot bath, stimulate healthy soil in the garden and deflect negative ions in your home. Given this impressive resume, we are happy to have as many Binchotan charcoal products as possible, and they’ve now created a Binchotan Charcoal Shaving Gel.

The Binchotan Charcoal Shaving Gel is a complete shaving experience, containing not only purifying Binchotan charcoal but also hydrating glycerin, invigorating rosemary and cooling menthol. What it does not contain are parabens, oil, synthetic fragrance or dye. Shaving Gel is a bit of a misnomer, as this is actually a 3-in-1 pre-shave lotion, shaving cream and aftershave that moisturizes, protects and soothes the delicate skin of the face and neck for a close shave that is not too close for comfort. As an all-in-one product, it’s perfect for busy mornings and, of course, travel. (Though we’re addressing the men here, it’s lovely on the legs as well, ladies, too.)

Ursa Major Traveler’s Skin Care Kit

The Traveler’s Skin Care Kit is another new travel essential from our friends at Ursa Major. Ursa Major provides men with healthy and highly effective skin care solutions that are a pleasure to use. These advanced formulations are robust, natural alternatives to the bland, chemical-laden products that pervade today’s marketplace. Ursa Major’s products never contain petrochemicals, sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrance or color, glycols, silicones or PEGs.

This complete collection of simple and effective skin care for men comes in TSA-approved sizes all boxed up for easy use. It makes the perfect gift too! This kit covers all the skin care bases and includes Ursa Major’s Fantastic Face Wash, Stellar Shave Cream and Fortifying Face Balm. It also contains five individually wrapped tonic-infused Essential Face Wipes….that can even be used on the body in a pinch!

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Hair Mask

philip kingsley elasticizer preshampoo

In case you haven’t noticed, we have been raving about Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer for years. It has won numerous awards, and is a go-to hair hero for celebrities, stylists, beauty editors and The Travel Beauty Team. Elasticizer was developed by Philip Kingsley in the 70s for legendary actress Audrey Hepburn. Audrey sought Philip’s help after years of on-set over-processing had left her hair majorly damaged. Audrey’s condition prompted Philip to formulate Elasticizer, which recently celebrated its 40th birthday.

                                                  Intensive Moisturizing Hair Treatment

This intensive moisturizing pre-shampoo treatment is magic! It delivers elasticity, bounce and shine to all hair types, even after just one use.

Elasticizer has been a lifesaver for the highlight-loving Travel Beauty Team. We wanted to share a quick how-to guide, as we have received many questions about how to apply Elasticizer at home. (Though if you can get to Philip’s Trichological Clinic in New York City or London to have an expert treatment and/or Elasticizer application, definitely do!)

Step-by-Step How-To-Guide

  • Lightly dampen hair with hands
  • Apply Elasticizer in sections, smoothing on the top of your hair and then working it into hair in sections with your whole hand
    • Fine & medium textured hair apply sparingly through mid lengths and ends two to three times a month
    • Coarse, wavy, curly or frizzy hair use more generously through entire hair length once or twice a week
    • Afro Caribbean hair – try Elasticizer Extreme
  • Leave in for 10-20 minutes…or longer
    • We have gone to the gym and played golf with Elasticizer on—just put hair in a bun after you apply the product and be on your way. The heat that your body generates from these activities gives the treatment and extra added punch!
    • It’s safe to leave Elasticizer in all day or sleep with it overnight under a shower cap
  • Rinse well and follow with appropriate shampoo, conditioner and scalp toner
    • When you condition after Elasticizer, you only need to rinse it through your hair—no need to leave on for several minutes

Philip-Kingsley-ElasticizerWhen to Use on Processed Hair

  • Do not use Elasticizer for three days before and three days after coloring hair
  • For fine & medium textured hair, use once a week
  • For coarse, wavy, curly, frizzy and Afro Caribbean hair, use twice a week

Experiment with Elasticizer

Elasticizer can also be used to style hair—this is something we learned through experimentation! It can be applied with a styling cream with some hold to give great frizz-free definition to curls and can be used to achieve that piecey ends look on an edgy bob.

Have a kid with curly-ques? A little Elasticizer makes a great leave-in conditioner and detangler.

We’ve even been told that some sensitive-skinned men love TO SHAVE WITH IT!

Have YOU conducted a successful Elasticizer experiment? Please do tell! We would love to share your tip(s) with the Travel Beauty community.
