Natural Looking Makeup Application

natural look makeup application mb york

I wanted to share my thoughts on makeup application, and what men really think about it. Having worked with thousands of women, I have heard the same things over and over, so I can say with certainty that most men don’t like a heavily made up look.

Enter The Kardashians…

Bringing theatrical makeup application to daytime with millions of girls following, I can’t help but wonder why women would follow their lead over listening to the men that love them, whether it be their fathers, husbands or boyfriends. I know there are men out there that love their wives no matter what their makeup or lack thereof looks like, but I have also had men whisper to me that they hate it, and words to the effect of “they think know better!”

I also can confidently say that there have been countless times I have done someone’s makeup, and the client tells me later that the minute they walked in the door, their husband commented on how great they look. They even go so far to say, go back and buy everything she put on your face. That is my testament to the fact that men don’t hate makeup, they just hate bad makeup, and unfortunately they rarely see what they would consider a good makeup application.

A Natural Look

We all know, men like you to look natural! They want to see you, and notice your beautiful eyes, lips, and cheekbones, and not worry that if they lean over to kiss you they will end up with orange foundation on their collar, smeared lipstick on their lips, and look like a drag queen themselves when half of your makeup application is transferred onto their face when they kiss you. If you are going for the “look but don’t touch” effect, and want to put up a wall between you and a man, this is a great way to do it!

What Your Makeup Application Says About You

Which brings me to dating, and what your makeup application says about you. For starters, anything that is bright or bold is going to compete with the attention you want focused on getting to know you! Do you really think strip eyelashes or caked on mascara makes you look confident? Maybe it looks like you are trying too hard, or that you have been on a 3 day bender, not bothering to apply fresh mascara and have been building it up over several days time. Lining your inner rims also looks dirty, makes your eyes look beady and smaller, and although you may feel edgy, he feels like he wishes he could take a napkin off the table and wipe it all off so he can see what you really look like. All the while, he is secretly thinking, “What on earth does she look like without the mask on? What is her skin color under the thick orange foundation and cake powder?”

OK, maybe I am going to far, and he isn’t thinking any of this through, but subconsciously you are saying, “Hi. I am a very high maintenance woman. I spend hours getting ready to go out, and looking flawless is more important to me than getting to know you.” I also get that you feel you have to stand out when you are maybe on Match.com and any potential date is getting 3 possible new matches during your first coffee or dinner date.

So What’s a Girl to Do?

Look gorgeous but not like you are wearing anything at all. Just a little light lip, dewey skin, and soft mascara with a smudge of liner. I know the “how to get the look” in the major beauty magazines tell you to do just that to look like the supermodel on the cover, but as an expert, I can tell you they are leaving out several steps, and to pull off a natural look, you want you skin to look flawless first and foremost.

It’s Not All or Nothing!

It seems to be an all or nothing option most women think they have. Either they wear none, because they don’t know how or don’t have the confidence to apply it or they go over the top with the wrong colors and technique and are married to it for years on end. Everyone can relate to the department store make-over where they leave with hundreds of dollars worth of products and clueless about how to apply it.

Lady Diana or Lady Gaga?

My goal is to teach you how to apply makeup like the girl next door, not the hooker next door. Think Princess Grace, or Princess Di, not Lady Gaga. Men don’t want to take the circus to dinner. Think more Lady Di than Lady Gaga.

Eye Makeup for Dummies

My Paint by Numbers Eyeshadow Kit teaches you, with all the tools included, how to do a flawless eye makeup application. 6 shadows, 3 brushes, a fool-proof diagram and the confidence you need for your true self to shine! Also, consider a custom blended foundation. You need a color matched perfectly to your skin so only you know you have it on. Your pores should show through, and your skin tone being evened out ensures that your beautiful eyes will have center stage.

So tone it down a little, but expertly and watch the men in your life fall in love with your confidence!

The Quest for Easy, Natural Makeup Application

easy natural make up application

In my years as a professional makeup artist, I’ve found that certain beauty blunders transcend generations. Moms can be critical of their teen/young adult daughters’ harsh makeup application, but often Moms don’t know how to help or teach their daughters a better way because they’ve never learned themselves. It is time for your daughter to unplug her phone, tablet and computer and spend some quality time bonding with you over the ritual of applying makeup…correctly.

Trending on YouTube

The trend today is for young ladies to turn to YouTube beauty video queens who look more like drag queens, and itemize as many as 30 or 40 products to layer on to the tune of hundreds of dollars. It’s time for mothers and daughters to unite in the quest for easy, natural makeup application. With these simple tips, even Dad will approve!

Pro Makeup Tips & Fixes

When it comes to eyeliner, there is a thin (black) line between gorgeous and goth. Black liquid liner can easily look “needily” and harsh. Then there’s the trend of lining inner rims of eyes, which makes eyes look “beady” and dirty.

Using a tiny angle eyeshadow brush and eyeshadow liner upper right along lash line and using a lighter color shadow underneath will soften your look.

This is very much a trend right now and one that mothers hate! Styles like this that makeup artists create for fashion shows may work on the runway, but not in real life.

Mascara should be a formula that stays soft on the lashes. 2 coats of a lighter formula accentuates lashes without looking like a Vegas Showgirl.

Using the wrong color foundation and/or too heavy of coverage is a common problem – for mothers and daughters. Most formulas are too yellow or orange. And many women apply too much and/or don’t blend it in well enough.

If using a liquid foundation, the key is to blend it in with a sponge or brush, not your fingers. Look for a formula with a hint of rose that looks fresher — or have one custom blended. You can also try a tinted moisturizer that is oil-free, with SPF and a light hint of color for natural looking coverage. B. Kamins BB Cream is a great one — particularly for teens and young adults. Its not chalky at all and contains just a hint of shimmer. (Fantastic for the summer!)

This results from using pressed powders with application sponges or cotton pad. Again, colors are usually too yellow or orange. The cakey finish accentuates pimples and breakouts. Not flattering!

Use a BIG powder brush with a pressed powder that has some pink in it. The bigger the brush, the sheerer it goes on. A matte powder is best since shimmery ones will again highlight breakouts.

These strip skin of natural oils and actually causes the skin to produce more oil, and leaves you very surface-dry. Makeup will not blend in over top.

Use a mild face wash — Lavido Purifying Face Cleanser, for example — and an oil-free moisturizer under makeup. Alchimie Forever Daily Defense Cream SPF 23 and Institut Esthederm Time Technology Cream are light and effective daily moisturizers. Teens often skip this step because they are worried it will make them break out, but the opposite is true. Also, using a scrub daily with salicylic acid will buff and polish the skin, help clear up and prevent breakouts and leave skin smooth for easier blending of foundation or tinted foundation/primer.

Beauty and the Brush

beauty and the makeup brush

You wouldn’t use a toothbrush on your hair and you couldn’t use a hair brush to paint your home, right? But most women still don’t use the proper brush when applying their makeup.

One of the most important parts of makeup application is using the right tools…especially the right brush. The smallest difference in brush size, shape or stiffness can greatly affect how different products go on and ultimately how you look.

Size Matters

Having done makeup on thousands of women, here’s what I often see: I’ll do a woman’s eye makeup, then draw them an eye and show them exactly what brush type is needed for each step so they can recreate the look at home. But more often than not, women buy the eye shadow but not the right brush, saying they already have the right brushes at home. Then they return, frustrated, saying that when they did their makeup using my eye shadows at home with their brushes, it never looks the same as when I did it. I’ve seen similar problems with shadow liner brushes. If the brush is too fluffy it will not deliver a strong enough line of color. The same with an angle crease brush. If it’s the right size, you can easily put it on the outer third of your eye and bring it around in the perfect place. If it’s not the right size…

Blush or Powder Brush?

Brush choices, and the importance of using the right ones in makeup application, aren’t just limited to your eyes. I know from experience that most of the women I’ve worked with think that a blush brush is a powder brush. However, the bigger the brush, the sheerer the color goes on, which is why powder brushes are so big. If you use a blush brush to apply a bronzer or powder formula of any kind and put it all over your face, you’ll end up with streaks of color and a very caked-on look. The same goes for the application of blush. If your blush brush is the right size and shape, there is little room for error, but if you’re using one of those tiny brushes that are often found inside blush compacts, you’ll have a thick stripe of blush that’s either too high or low, and most likely too bright.

Now, you can avoid these common brushes with disaster with my new Weapons of Mass Seduction Brush Kit. A best seller on TV Shopping Networks, it features 6 different vegan brushes that are the perfect application tools for a variety of makeup applications. The kit also includes simple instructions on how to use each brush. These brushes work seamlessly with my product line including my Beauty Ammo and Paint by Numbers Kits, as well as yours, and the result is simply beautiful makeup application every time.

Makeup Tips for Women 40 and Over

mb york makeup tips for women over 40

A few quick makeup changes can make a huge difference in how (old) you (look) are perceived…not to mention how you feel. One of my favorite stories illustrating this point is when my Aunt Patty stopped by my spa for a quick makeup touch up; she was in her late forties at the time. Later that day, she called to tell me that when she left the spa, she was whistled at and even had a stranger approach her and ask her if she was a famous newscaster! Talk about a confidence booster…no new outfit can do that for you! In fact, some of the best compliments I get are from the husbands of my clients. Time and time again I’ve been told that the men in my clients’ lives LOVE the light touch that I use; many husbands even tell their wives to buy everything I applied!

My motivation to keep doing what I do year after year is the satisfaction I feel after each client’s significant transformation – especially in such a short amount of time. As we get older, it becomes even more important to know what the right makeup can do for you…as well as what the wrong makeup can do to hurt you. My techniques are very fast and natural. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Tip One: Keep Up With The Times

A lot of women get stuck in a time warp, wearing the same makeup for years. I have one client that has been addicted to a bright orange lipstick forever; she’s worn it for several decades. I can’t drive past her house without imagining big orange lips on the front door, nor can anyone that knows her picture her without that bright orange kisser. Her friends routinely beg me to change it and suggest other colors. Throughout the years, I have spent time with her, showing shades that are far more flattering, but once out the door, she goes back to her security blanket orange color. Then there is the 60-something accountant that is still stuck in the 1960s with her pencil thin brow shape, powder blue eyeshadow and candy pink lips. She picked these colors about 45 years ago and has stuck with them ever since. We all know someone like this…or perhaps you’re realizing you ARE someone like this. Repent now…you’ll be glad you did.

Many women, like the ones above, are holding on to a lipstick color that’s all wrong for them. It is too dark, too matte, too brown…and men in particular hate it! It looks harsh and dull and accentuates lip lines and signs of aging. This is the issue that most women face: their makeup is actually making them look older. Without the right primers, moisturizers and great skin underneath, most concealers, powders and foundations get stuck in the fine lines and wrinkles and actually accentuate the imperfections. There’s also the problem of finding the right foundation color. Most women who sit in my chair are using formulas that are too yellow, which tend to make the skin look sallow, and lacking youthfulness. But they bought it years ago and just stuck with it. Women also tend to either not use enough make up (blush, etc.) because they are unsure of how to apply it, or they use too much…and usually use the wrong tools to apply it. As women get older, it is best to keep it natural…and be willing to try something new!

Tip Two: Don’t Try To Be TOO Trendy!

When you read about “trends” in makeup, I believe it is meant for teenage girls and that’s about it. “Bold eyes with nude lips” or “bright blush and glossy lips” are trends made to sell make up, not bring out your very best. There are certainly times, like New Years Eve or a black tie event, when you may want to do a bolder lip or heavier eyeliner, but what I am tackling is the mess of everyday makeup that women do. Most of us aren’t trying to look like a Victoria’s Secret model to go to the office. And even if you are going on a hot date, there is nothing that screams “desperate” like a heavy handed makeup application. I will say it again: men in particular hate harsh make up.

The problem with department stores and the traditional way that makeup is sold is that most colors out there shouldn’t be available to, or worn by, anyone. I am always looking at the choices of lipstick, powder, blush, shadows, etc. and can usually find ONE color that I think would be flattering on most women. The rest SHOULD NOT BE WORN BY ANYONE – I call them CLOWN MAKE UP. Unfortunately, many of us buy our makeup at a department store, which is a recipe for disaster.

Tip Three: Do Department Store Beauty At Your Own Risk!

If you succumb to the “department store makeover”, you are now at the mercy of the salesperson that is doing your application: his or her training and expertise, not to mention taste in makeup. Also, they are limited to selling the brand they work for, and as I stated, most of these should not be worn on anyone. They also may not have a lot of experience, so at best it will be a hit or miss with the colors they choose and application technique they use. I can almost guarantee that the application will be very complicated, as well as hugely expensive if you buy all the products that they use on you. I know because these are the horror stories I’m told time and time again. Let’s assume that you got lucky and actually like the look of the salesperson’s application, so you splurged and bought all the products. When you got home, though, and tried to recreate the look yourself,  you could not achieve the same results. There is always something missing. This is why it is always best to keep it simple, not too trendy but also not the same rigid application year in and year out.

Makeup and Foundation Tips From MB York

makeup liquid foundation

Foundation Information: Wear It Well

Maybe you’ve been going light on makeup and foundation over the warmer summer months, as we have, but as we transition into fall weather here are some great tips from M.B. York on getting your foundation and eye makeup just right.

To Wear Or Not To Wear?

Foundation is one of the most important steps of makeup application (after my Beauty Ammo Kit – more on that in a bit). Getting the color right is crucial. If you are trusting the wrong lighting, wrong salesperson, or wrong formula, there is a lot of room for error. In my 20 years of custom blending foundations, here is what I’ve found:

Many formulas are too yellow. One way to correct this is add a small amount of fuchsia toner to a foundation. Ideally, you want an equal amount of pink and yellow in your skin, and I often have to “de-orange” women’s foundation.

Most women don’t want to look too pale, and there can be added issues like rosacea or freckles, on top of fair skin. Do you go lighter like the base, darker like the freckles or somewhere in between?  Most women want some color in their skin, and look best with a slightly darker formula.

I prefer an oil-free liquid formula: They are easiest to apply and look most natural.

How To Apply

Another mistake women make is blending foundation in their fingers. It ends up looking and feeling too heavy on the skin, and if the color isn’t perfect to begin with, it will sit on top of the skin. It’s best to use a sponge to blend foundation in. You want to get the coverage you need while looking like you have nothing on. Dot the foundation formula on your nose, forehead, chin and on each cheek, and then blend it all in with the sponge. The right color liquid foundation, correctly applied with a sponge, is the secret to beautiful skin. When your skin looks great, you can get away with wearing a lot less make up. One more secret? My Beauty Ammo Kit.

Beauty Ammo Kit: Your Eye Area Arsenal

My 3 step Beauty Ammo Kit is all you need for a flawless eye area. Here’s why:

Most eye creams just absorb into your skin. If you follow with concealer, powder or foundation, the makeup collects in the fine lines and actually makes your wrinkles more pronounced.

  • Step 1 of the Beauty Ammo Kit, Collagen Eye Mask, is a thick, rich base that stays on all day. It contains collagen and shea butter to provide serious hydration.
  • Step 2, Line Putty, goes right on top of the Collagen Eye Mask, and fills in fine lines while it soothes skin with chamomile and witch hazel.
  • Step 3 is my Dual Action Concealer. Once you have the rich base provided by steps 1 and 2, you can use a lot more concealer to get the coverage you need without worrying about it caking, creasing and making fine lines look worse. You can also use the concealer on your eyelid as a great base for your eye shadow.

Be sure to check out the rest of the Travel Beauty Blog for more tips on getting great-looking skin.

M.B. York’s Beauty Ammo kit is really as fabulous as it sounds. We have many clients spanning 25 – 92 (no joke) that swear by this simple regimen, not to mention a list of celebrities that go on and on.
