The Best Global Beauty Products

This article was recently published on Fathom (fathomaway.com), Travel Beauty’s go-to resource for everything you’ll need while globetrotting - from the best places to stay, eat, visit and shop to the essentials you want with you on the road. Fathom is our insider’s guide for everything travel. In September, during its highly anticipated Beauty-in-Travel Week, Travel Beauty was asked to give our baker’s dozen (13, to be exact) of the very best beauty products from around the globe. Hope that you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed writing it…

Global Beauty Finds: The 13 Best Products

We continue beauty-in-travel week with a look at the best beauty products from around the world. There’s no one more qualified to give us a baker’s dozen than a woman who spends her life looking for such potions: frequent flier and product junkie Alyssa Barrie Weiss, the founder of the website Travel Beauty.

best-global-beauty-productsAs a child, I traveled a great deal with my parents, mostly to Europe and the Middle East. When we arrived at our destination, the first thing my mother did was take my brother and me to the local pharmacy or pharmacie. Whether we were in Tel Aviv, Paris, Berlin, or Florence, she always knew which one was the best. These outings felt like an adventure: The pharmacies overseas were different from those in New York City. They were fancy and old-world, and I loved them.

As an adult, I developed a vast interest and knowledge of products, as well as an obsessive compulsion for them, and sought the foremost beauty industry experts to learn more. This led me to Yasmine Djerradine, a veteran skin care expert from Paris and owner of Yasmine Djerradine Institut de Beauté on the Upper East Side in Manhattan. And Ishi, of Salon Ishi, the guru leading the way in high-tech Japanese hair care. Yasmine and Ishi took me under their wings and educated me on the best products and treatments.

My love for travel took me to far-flung destinations, where I was able to feed my product addiction by scouring the places I visited for their best beauty finds. I have curated these products, with the help of our panel of industry experts, on my website,Travel Beauty, an online destination for the very best of all things beauty from around the globe.

There is so much great stuff to try, but Fathom asked me for a baker’s dozen of my favorite global beauty finds of all time:

1. Heaven Skincare Bee Venom Mask

Provenance: United Kingdom

Why I Love It: It multi-tasks as a moisturizer, and you can feel it tightening the skin and brightening the complexion. The bee venom literally paralyzes the muscles beneath the skin. It’s basically an organic alternative to Botox.

2. Lavido Hyaluronic Acid Eye Alert Cream

Provenance: Israel

Why I Love It: Formulated with plant-based hyaluronic acid, it brightens, moisturizes, and relieves puffiness around the eye area, and diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Bottom line: It shaves years off your eye area.

3. Vine Minus Ion Care Water

Provenance: Japan

Why I Love It: It does everything but walk the dog. Its negatively charged ions enable it to bond to hair and skin so that this multi-tasking miracle water:

- Strengthens fine hair, making it feel and look thicker.

- Boosts the strength of conditioners, treatments, or styling aids, allowing the products to penetrate deeper and work better.

- Enhances the efficacy of your skin care regimen if used before toner, serum, and moisturizer.

- Can be used as a makeup remover on face and eyes.

- Can be used to brush teeth when they feel especially hairy.

Toiletry Bag Packing Tips

When you travel with as many expensive toiletries as we do, you learn – rather quickly – which packing strategies work and which leave you with a toiletry travel kit coated in night cream. Here are our roadtested methods for arriving at your destination with your products – and your beauty regimen – fully in tact.

It’s What’s Outside that Counts

First and foremost, choose your toiletry bag wisely. We designed our Travel Beauty Travel Bag to be slightly padded, zipper-enclosed and plastic-lined. The padding protects products from breakage, but if the unfortunate happens, the plastic lining and zipper stops it from getting unfortunate all over your vacation wardrobe!

Dust Off Your Dust Bags

More and more beauty products come in eco-friendly glass bottles every day. And though they be beautiful on our vanity, they are perilous in our carry-ons. Enter the smaller size dust bags you’ve likely amassed…you know, the ones that come with large jewelry pieces (hello, Alexis Bittar bangle) and small leather goods. These are your beauty products’ best friends. Put each glass product in its own bag (the thicker, the better) to protect them from banging against each other and then breaking.

Know Your Products’ M.O.

What spills easily and what does not? For example, there’s an oil we love, but it seeps out of its bottle very easily. We learned (the messy way) that this particular product has to stay home. (We are not fans of transferring containers, especially with oils. Too much gets lost in transportation!) Also, pump bottles – the types you have to press down to lock – are all-around bad travel buddies. The pump almost always opens, and then the darn thing is pumping product out the entire time you’re in transit, unbeknownst to you! As much as possible, go with tubes that have tightly-closing flip tops. We also love powder formulas for travel, like Juvena Pure Lifting Peeling Powder. The less liquids to worry about, the better.

Pack Products that Pack a Triple Punch (Or More)

Most of the products we really love do many different things…and do them all well. A quality multi-purpose oil, like Huile 27 can be used from scalp to soles, and works fabulously wherever you apply it. When thinking of which products multi-task well, don’t forget about those that are unisex! Ursa Major Essential Face Wipes are traditionally a men’s product. But these wipes are so cleansing and refreshing, we love them just as much as our husbands do! Then there’s Vine Minus Ion Water, which is so high tech and multi-talented it could probably fly the plane if need be. It is a great refresher/primer for hair and face, it moisturizes and has antibacterial properties. You can even brush your teeth with it!

Always Pack a Dream Cream

Bring one product you can keep with you (in your purse) and that can go anywhere on you. Heaven Skincare Black Label Vanilla Pod Hand & Nail Cream is made with such high quality organic ingredients you can use it not only on your hands and nails (and arms and legs and feet) but also on your face. Plus, the luscious scent has the aromatherapeutic benefits of being calming, comforting and stress reducing! ‘Cause, you know, travel can be a bit stressful sometimes…

Bon Voyage!

The Best Skin Firming and Moisturizing Products for Summer

After that humdinger of a winter we just suffered through, the Travel Beauty team feels more than ready to shed some layers. Unfortunately, upon baring some body, we noticed that certain areas were not quite, erm, suitable for public consumption just yet. So just in time for sandal and swimsuit season, we’ve added some exciting new luxury body care products from Heaven SkincareMio Skincare and Alchimie Forever.

Thigh Hopes Courtesy of Mio Skincare

It happens every June: The bathing suit moment of truth. We don our two-piece for the first time in near a year, stand in front of a full length mirror and take stock of all that’s out of whack. After trying not to bawl in our bikini, we grab our favorite body products and get to work.

For those areas we’d like to tighten and tone (upper arms, abdomen, bum and thighs), here are two new products we seriously love:

The dynamic duo of Mio Skincare’s Double Buff dual action enzyme exfoliator and The Activist Firming Body Oil  — both of which can be found in Mio’s Strong is the New Skinny Kit — is the perfect cellulite-pummeling one-two punch. You apply Double Buff on dry skin, which may seem a little odd for a body scrub, but actually makes the scrubbing action that much more effective. You can then rinse it off as soon as you get in the shower. We like to apply The Activist immediately after turning off the shower, while skin is still damp and warm. Once applied, we immediately see a firmer, smoother silhouette. The gel formula is great for summer too: it soaks in quickly, completely and weightlessly, so no heavy feeling on the skin in the hot, hot heat.

Another Natural Skin Firming Oil for Bikini Season

Heaven Skincare Firming & Stretchmark Oil is a luxe and lovely body oil that moisturizes and firms skin while breaking down cellulite and increasing collagen production. It is also chock full of anti-inflammatory, calming and healing ingredients (all organic!) to optimize overall skin health. It gives us gorgeous glowing nourished skin with reduced dimples and improved tone and elasticity. It also smells delicious.

If the summer usually means extra body breakouts for you, this oil is just the thing (we promise)!  This oil is formulated with several purifying organic essential oils such as cypress, juniper and lavender that help release toxins from the skin. Instead of aggravating any body breakouts, this oil is fabulous for clearing blackheads and blemishes. And not just the skin on your body: due to the organic, pure and high quality oils used, you can use this oil to clear blackheads and blemishes on the face as well.

Derriere Double Whammy

Personally, I like to mix either of these oils with a body lotion (Mio Skincare strikes again: The A Cream firming active body cream is our top choice) and knead that concoction into my skin with my knuckles. Yes, my knuckles. Cellulite is a tough mother. Give her a knuckle sandwich! Just be careful on your upper arms if you are pale; get too feisty and you may bruise. True story.

Let Us Give You A Hand With Your Hands And Feet

If only the summer shape-up stopped there! No, in addition to the wiggly bits, we’ve got elbows, knees and feet drier than our favorite Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc. These dry patches are not only unsightly but also make self-tanner application nearly impossible.  We’re in need of a hard-working cream.

Nail Cream from Heaven Skincare

Heaven Skincare’s Black Label Vanilla Pod Hand & Nail Cream has come to our rescue. Dubbed “a mini-manicure in a jar”, this this all-natural, paraben-free hand and nail cream stays (and works) on hands and nails for 4+ hours, even in water, nourishing skin and strengthening nails. It deeply moisturizes while also reducing the amount of oil on hands, making it safer to touch the face without transferring pore-clogging oils. This intensive treatment also exfoliates: It contains the finest grains of sand that work to soften and exfoliate rough elbows, knees, heels, etc. Don’t worry, it doesn’t feel like you dropped the jar while at the beach. The grains of sand are so fine as to be almost imperceptible…but the effects are not! The skin is left deeply moisturized, softened and perfected. As with Heaven’s Cellulite Oil, the high quality organic ingredients used make this cream safe to use on the face. This little tub of wonderful comes with us everywhere.

Dry Skin Balm from Alchimie Forever

As frequent travelers, we downright demand all products we use to multi-task in some way; to be packed in our dopp kit, you better be performing double or triple duty. So it is not lightly that we say Alchimie Forever’s Dry Skin Balm is a skin care overachiever. It replenishes moisture to soften and soothe chapped, irritated skin. The shea butter and jojoba seed oil condition and smooth out skin texture for a silky, comfortable feel. Watercress and vitamin E infuse skin with antioxidants to nourish, hydrate and protect against damaging free radicals, giving skin an overall healthy and youthful look.

Dry Skin Balm goes above and beyond that, though. It also reduces swelling, minimizes brown spots and has anti-aging effects. We use it on any and all rough patches: hands, elbows, knees, and heels. Great as a body moisturizer as well. It is also safe and effective on our kids’ skin to help soothe and heal the non-stop irritations that the summer months seem to bring.
