Protect The Skin You’re In

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Beyond your mother nagging you to death to apply sunscreen before you brave the great outdoors, it’s nice to know that there have been many advancements in the field of skin cancer detection. The level of awareness for the disease has skyrocketed within the last generation alone. I still have visions, from my childhood, of my father sitting on a lounge chair, covered in Johnson & Johnson’s baby oil, holding a bright yellow sun visor inches from his face to maximize his exposure to the sun. Whereas today, I apply SPF 30 sunscreen before I slip into my bikini to ensure that I don’t miss an inch on my face or body. I also apply an SPF hair mask and wear sunglasses as both your scalp and eyes can burn and are not immune to Melanoma either. Ocular Melanoma can present as a freckle within the eye.

But let’s go beyond the sunscreen

It’s critical to visit a board certified dermatologist for an annual skin screening and not only if you fall into the high risk group of those with light skin, eyes and a family history of skin cancer. It’s crucial that everyone go. Often, those with dark skin and eyes assume they are immune from skin cancer and wind up with serious issues down the road due to a lack of screenings and late detection. But don’t go to see a derm only because 1 in 5 Americans will have skin cancer in their lifetime, nor because Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, causes one death every hour. And not only because it’s the most common cancer diagnosis in adults 25 – 29. And certainly not only because children that have experienced 5+ sun burns in their lives are 80% more likely to develop skin cancer, nor because each year there are more instances of skin cancer than lung, breast and colon cancer combined. You must go because this is an easy one to prevent.

A technological leap forward in skin screening

Until recently the protocol for conducting skin screenings was a manual, imperfect process. Even with the expertise of a highly-skilled, board certified dermatologist armed with the appropriate screening tools, a manual process left physicians piecing together notes from the year before with no standardized method for tracking changes in the skin over time.

Enter DermSpectra, a revolutionary new breakthrough in technology that has standardized the skin screening process with digital imaging capable of tracking even the most minute of changes in the skin over time. When it comes to skin cancer, picking up the smallest change in a mole or growth can mean the difference between life and death.

DermSpectra skin cancer awareness monthYour 10 minutes of fame

DermSpectra, or The Box, as Dr. Mitchell Kline, a board certified clinical dermatologist who specializes in Melanoma surgery and staging, lovingly calls it, uses high speed, professionally focused cameras and lenses, customized for the patient’s skin type, to capture a 360 degree view of the skin in its entirety. Its akin to E! Live’s 360 degree camera used on the red carpet at The Oscars to give us a virtually 3 dimensional view of the haute couture fashions that the the A list actors are dressed in. DermSpectra is the very first full body digital imaging system in the United States that captures standardized, high definition photography of the skin. This imaging tool enables physicians to objectively review and monitor critical skin changes over time.

How does it work?

You strip down to your underoos at the very least – if you feel at ease bearing more – even better! Melanoma can pop up in the least expected of areas, even in places where the sun don’t shine. Climb into the DermSpectra Imaging Unit and move through a series of 9 poses while dozens of cameras capture 36.7 MP high resolution photos of the body from a 360 degree vantage point. These images are instantly available and become a baseline for the long term evaluation and tracking of even the smallest changes in the skin over time. All the information is stored securely for the patient’s and physician’s eyes only.

DermSpectra can only be found in three locations in The United States – at Travel Beauty’s go to dermatologist, Dr. Mitchell Kline’s Park Avenue practice on the upper east side of Manhattan, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and Oregon Health and Science University in Portland Oregon.

So what are you waiting for?

Winter Vacation Skin and Hair Care Essentials

It’s beginning to feel a lot like winter in the northeast, which for many of us means holiday travel. Whether you plan to head out west on a ski vacation or are destined for the tropical sands of the Caribbean, packing proper skin and hair care is essential!

For Face

Whether you are hitting the slopes or preparing to worship the sun, packing a sunscreen that will protect your skin from the elements is a must. Even if you find yourself in cold temperatures, if the sun is out, sunscreen is in order. Sun tends to accelerate the skin’s aging process so for face, I love Institut Esthederm Bronz Repair Sunscreen For Face SPF 15. This French cult favorite is high tech, anti-aging sun care that enables you to enjoy the benefits of the sun without experiencing its harmful effects. There’s real science behind this line of bio-cosmetics that takes a completely different approach to sun care. It works with aging skin’s biology and the sun’s properties, instead of against these factors, enabling your skin to protect itself from the elements. Institut Esthederm’s sun care products are bar none — the best you can find on the market. And because of active ingredients like beeswax and rice bran oil that moisturize and nourish skin, containing anti-free radical properties, Bronz Repair can be used all day as your daily anti-aging moisturizer while on vacation. For stronger protection or if you desire a sunscreen that has a hint of tint, try B. Kamins Laboratories Sun Defense SPF 30 for face, neck and décolleté. It not only protects you from the harmful rays of the sun, but also guards against premature wrinkles that can result from sun exposure.

For Body

Institut Esthederm Sun Care Oil Extreme Sun is the best sun care for body you can find and also doubles as a luxurious body care oil all year long. It ensures safe prolonged sun exposure in severe conditions, including the intense tropical sun. It allows a deep, intense natural tan to develop without any harmful UV damage. Sun Care Oil Extreme is formulated with UV in-Cellium Technology to protect the skin from the inside by strengthening its self-defense systems. This hi-tech sunscreen is also extremely moisturizing, and can be used to protect your hair from the harmful rays of the sun as well, making it a multi-tasking product ideal for traveling light.

For Hair

If you are going on a warm weather vacation, Philip Kingsley Swimcap is a must. Fact: Your hair and scalp can get burnt in the sun. This leave-in hair treatment contains SPF to protect your crown from getting scorched and moisturizes your hair in the process. It even provides for a convenient way to style your hair while on the beach or by the pool that keeps it off your face. I apply it in sections and then braid my hair. For short hair just apply and slick hair back. Trés chick! When you wash it out at the end of the day, your hair will feel silky, smooth and nourished.

Aprés Sun

Whether you finished your day a little crispier for the wear or not, remember to treat your skin to some extra added tender loving care. For face, I love Cosmetics 27 Huile 27. It’s a 100% natural, multi-tasking, anti-aging face oil that moisturizes, softens and regenerates skin. It actually rebalances skin function and restructures epidermal tissue, which can get knocked off kilter after a day in the sun. You can mix it into your favorite moisturizer, to give it an extra boost of hydration and even apply it to lips and hair for some extra added nourishment. For body, Mio Skincare The A Cream Firming Active Body Cream not only restores elasticity and firmness to the skin but contains ingredients like aloe vera juice and avocado oil which makes it a superb after sun moisturizing body treatment.

Don’t Leave Out Your Lips

Whether you’ll be seeing sand or snow, be sure to pack B. Kamins Laboratories SPF 20 Lip Balm as well. In extreme cold, wind or sun, lips are usually the first place to suffer. Just a few minutes of exposure to extreme weather can lead to days of chapped, cracked lips. Reapply your lip balm frequently to keep your lips comfortable and protected all day and night.

Bon Voyage!

Transitioning Your Winter Skin Care Routine For Spring

How to help your skin through this warm & sunny one day, cold & snowy the next weather we’re experiencing? Get an expert opinion. Here is what Travel Beauty expert Yasmine Djerradine has to say.

—————-

Transitional weather, like the type that we are experiencing right now, can be difficult on the visage. Skin can change, you may start to experience blemishes, etc. Dryness that you might have experienced over the winter is likely subsiding and you may be finding yourself with a normal or even combination skin tone. The rich moisturizer that you used over the winter to protect yourself from the cold is probably no longer ideal.

Sheer, Luminous Coverage

Now is the perfect time to think about incorporating a BB Cream into your daily routine. B. Kamins Laboratories makes a fabulous anti-aging one that primes, protects and perfects. It’s lightweight, non-greasy and provides sheer, luminous, natural looking coverage. It’s formulated with vitamins, peptides and antioxidants and counteracts damage caused by stress and the sun. It can be used over sunscreen or layered on top of a moisturizer or serum.

Light Serums for Warmer Weather

Cosmetics 27’s Essence 27 by M.E. SkinLab is a superb, all natural, lightweight, anti-aging serum that is perfect for the summer. This ultra-fine fluid allows for maximum penetration of the effective ingredients. After use, skin appears “plumped up” and feels and looks healthier. This is great for using under your sunscreen or moisturizer.

Another lightweight anti-aging serum option is B. Kamins’ Nia-Stem Serum Kx. It will give your skin just the boost it needs to wake up from the winter cold. It consists of a unique combination of ingredients, including niacin, plant stem cells and B. Kamins exclusive Bio-Maple™ Compound, which detoxifies cells to reveal bright, even-toned, younger-looking skin. This serum is ideal for reactive skin, as it reduces redness and irritation. Apply it under your sunscreen or moisturizer.

Interview With Dermatologist Dr. Mitchell A. Kline

Dr. Mitchell A. Kline is a New York board-certified clinical dermatologist. His ongoing focuses include melanoma, neurophysiology and HIV/AIDS, and he has done significant research on non-invasive melanoma detection techniques, particularly reflectance confocal microscopy, which he uses at his office.

Dr. Kline specializes in melanoma treatment and staging, total body dermoscopy, and DermaSpectra total body digital imaging. While Dr. Kline is considered a go-to doctor in New York City for skin cancer concerns, his office also offers an array of cosmetic treatments including injectables, fillers, photo-facials, and chemical peels. He is one of the few doctors in New York to offer PRP facials (Vampire Facials), as well as PRP for hair regeneration.

Dr. Kline studied at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, training in Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate Hospital following his graduation. He participated in research at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Pediatric Neurosurgery and Neurophysiology, receiving a Young Investigator Award from the National Institutes of Health. Subsequent training in Dermatology was completed at Cornell, Rockefeller University and Memorial Sloan-Kettering. He was Chief Resident in Dermatology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering/Cornell University from 1989-1990. He is also on the Clinical Board of Melanoma Research Alliance and honorary of the year by Melanoma Research Foundation.

His work and research have been the subject of stories on CBS, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, and featured on the HBO documentary “Cancer: Urgency to Emergency.” We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Kline about his work.

You Are Well-known For Your Expertise In The Field of Skin Cancer. Was Skin Cancer Detection and Treatment Your Original Focus?

MK: Paths are complicated. Perhaps the best way to describe it is that melanoma detection requires a melding of mathematics, physics of optics and light, an understanding of visual perception, as in art, and an appreciation for humanistic parts of caring for people.

What Is Something You Wish Every Woman Knew About Melanoma and Melanoma Prevention?

MK: That putting sunscreen on face, ears, scalp and hands as a daily habit after showering will make an enormous difference in skin quality and cancer risk. The habit will continue for beach and the great exposures of daily use.

You Are One of the Few Physicians in New York to Offer the “Vampire Facial”. What Happens During this Treatment and What Are Results?

MK: The use of Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy or PRP, on both hair growth and the effects on facial collagen are well known as variable but often superb for decades to orthopedists who treat athletes and injuries. The vampire facial utilizes the same simple technique whereby platelet-rich plasma is separated from the other components of the patient’s blood and then injected into the skin or scalp. Over 5 successive treatments and in combination with topical agents of proven value can result in collagen and hyaluronidase acid stimulation, texture improvement and reduction of wrinkles. There is typically no or little down time and minimal discomfort.

If Women Want to Start Preventative Cosmetic Treatments in Their Early 30s, or Earlier, What Are the Best Treatments to Start With?

MK: Of course, moisturize photoprotectants and retinol, retinoids and antioxidants dramatically prevent signs of aging and damage that causes skin cancer.

Depending upon the ways in which they use their muscles of facial expression to form creases, have genetic propensity for aging, brown spots or wrinkles, we would tailor such treatments. Treatments can range from specific topical antioxidant creams and gels scientifically backed with known benefits over years, light IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) to remove veins, red areas and brown spots, to delicate Botox and fillers that block progression of future lines without creating any change at in the beautiful natural contours and shapes of the face.

Underappreciated is the benefit of rest, diet and supplements that truly affect the way the skin ages and damages. The science is astounding and soon will become part of prevention rather than treating problems that develop.

Any New and Exciting Developments and Products on the Horizon for 2016-2017?

MK: A giant step is the development of a cream that will dissolve brown spots known as keratoses. It is the most common thing we see on people’s skins at every age especially later.

Huge changes are at hand with radio frequency tools, topical anti-aging agents, some that will not require any needles or invasive treatments.

How to Remove Brown Spots

Dr. Dara Liotta’s blog post about BBL laser treatment for brown spots caused by sun exposure is worth a repost as summer gets underway. If you are a sun worshipper, you may want to investigate this simple procedure that has several anti-aging benefits.

—————————————————–

Wear sunscreen. “Sunspots”, “age spots”, or even worse, “liver spots” are flat, non-raised, brown spots or freckles that develop on the skin after prolonged exposure to direct ultraviolet (or UV) rays. In med-speak, they’re called “solar lentigines”. Contrary to the common-speak, people of all ages are susceptible to these spots, and those with lighter skin tend to develop them more frequently. The most common areas to develop brown spots are those exposed to the sun most often: the face, chest, and hands.

How to Banish Brown Spots

The good news is that there is a fairly simple and relatively painless way to banish these brown spots. Summertime, when most people have their greatest sun exposure, is usually the time that we accumulate these brown spots, so I generally recommend that people wait until the fall for removal. There are various topical treatments that have been recommended for these pigmented spots, but the quickest and most effective treatment is BBL (broadband light) treatment. BBL is FDA cleared for the treatment of benign pigmented lesions, among other conditions.

The light energy delivered by the BBL will be absorbed by the unwanted melanin responsible for pigmented lesions in the upper layers of the skin. Over the next few days to two weeks, the pigmented lesions will darken and fall off. Typically, three sessions, spaced two weeks apart are required for most effective removal of brown spots. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes, and feels like the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. Most patients only find the treatment mildly uncomfortable. BBL treatment for brown spots requires no real downtime. There is occasionally slight redness of the skin, but when this occurs, it generally subsides in the few hours following your treatment. You can use moisturizer or cover-up on the face immediately following the procedure.

Anti-aging Anyone?

An added bonus of the treatment is that as the light energy of the BBL gently heats the upper layers of your skin, it stimulates your skin cells to regenerate new collagen, leading to increased skin firmness, smoother skin texture, and a more even color to your skin surface. Most patients notice positive changes even after their very first session, though the results are cumulative. In my office, I offer a BBL treatment called “Forever Young BBL”, which is a special type of BBL treatment that can help you greatly improve your skin’s appearance and health. In fact, scientific evidence from a long-term Stanford University study demonstrates regular maintenance treatments using Forever Young BBL functionally rejuvenates skin and delays skin aging. Studies include patients treated 10+ years ago.

What Are Your Brown Spots Telling You?

Brown spots from the sun, or solar lentigines, are benign, but they do indicate excessive sun exposure, a risk factor for the development of skin cancers. Additionally, they will return with repeated sun exposure. So, ladies and gentlemen, wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.
